Friend and comforter

Wednesday, 8/26/15 readings, Second Church Berkeley
SH Ps. 139:17, 18
17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! 18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
SH Isa. 40:1
1 Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.
SH Isa. 52:9, 10
9 Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. 10 The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
SH Gen. 12:1, 2
1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
SH Ex. 3:1-8 (to 1st ;), 10-12 (to 1st ;)
1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. 2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. 4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. 5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. 6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God. 7 And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; 8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; 10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt. 11 And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? 12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee;
SH Ex. 33:11 (to 1st .)
11 And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend.
SH Isa. 41:8 1st thou, 10
8 …thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend. 10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
SH John 13:31 1st Jesus, 34
31 …Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
SH John 14:15-18, 25, 26
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. 26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
SH Rom. 12:10
10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
SH II Pet. 1:2, 3
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
SH Rev. 4:11
11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
SH 518:15-19
The rich in spirit help the poor in
one grand brotherhood, all having the same
Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth
his brother’s need and supplieth it, seeking his own in
another’s good.
SH 407:11 Christian

Science is the sovereign panacea, giving strength to the
weakness of mortal mind, – strength from the immortal
and omnipotent Mind, – and lifting humanity above
itself into purer desires, even into spiritual power and
good-will to man.
SH 366:30-31
If we would open their prison doors for the sick, we
must first learn to bind up the broken-hearted.
SH 433:31-1 Christ
Christ, Truth, the spirit of Life and the
friend of Mortal Man, can open wide those prison doors
and set the captive free.
SH 495:8 classify
classify sickness and error as our Master did,
when he spoke of the sick, “whom Satan hath
bound,” and find a sovereign antidote for error in the life-
giving power of Truth acting on human belief, a power
which opens the prison doors to such as are bound, and
sets the captive free physically and morally.
SH 78:28
Spirit blesses man, but man cannot “tell whence
it cometh.” By it the sick are healed, the sorrowing are
comforted, and the sinning are reformed. These are the
effects of one universal God, the invisible good dwelling
in eternal Science.
SH 34:5-9
that Truth has come to the understanding? If Christ,
Truth, has come to us in demonstration, no other com-
memoration is requisite, for demonstration is Immanuel,
or God with us; and if a friend be with us, why need we
memorials of that friend?
SH 49:14
The meek demonstrator of good, the highest instruc-
tor and friend of man, met his earthly fate alone with
God. No human eye was there to pity, no
arm to save. Forsaken by all whom he had
blessed, this faithful sentinel of God at the highest
post of power, charged with the grandest trust of
heaven, was ready to be transformed by the renewing
of the infinite Spirit. He was to prove that the Christ
is not subject to material conditions, but is above the
reach of human wrath, and is able, through Truth,
Life, and Love, to triumph over sin, sickness, death, and
the grave.
SH 234:4-8
Whatever inspires with wisdom, Truth, or Love – be
it song, sermon, or Science – blesses the human family
with crumbs of comfort from Christ’s table
feeding the hungry and giving living waters to
the thirsty.
SH 578:11-12 Love
rod and [LOVE’S] staff they comfort me.
[LOVE] prepareth a table before me in the presence of
SH 127:23
There is no physical science, inasmuch as all truth
proceeds from the divine Mind. Therefore truth is not
human, and is not a law of matter, for matter
is not a lawgiver. Science is an emanation of
divine Mind, and is alone able to interpret God aright.
It has a spiritual, and not a material origin. It is a divine
utterance, – the Comforter which leadeth into all truth.
Christian Science eschews what is called natural science,
in so far as this is built on the false hypotheses that matter
is its own lawgiver, that law is founded on material con-
ditions, and that these are final and overrule the might of
divine Mind. Good is natural and primitive. It is not
miraculous to itself.
SH 331:26 Life
Life, Truth, and Love constitute the triune Person
called God, – that is, the triply divine Principle, Love.
They represent a trinity in unity, three in
one, – the same in essence, though multi-
form in office: God the Father-Mother; Christ the spirit-
ual idea of sonship; divine Science or the Holy Comforter.
These three express in divine Science the threefold, essen-
tial nature of the infinite. They also indicate the divine
Principle of scientific being, the intelligent relation of God
to man and the universe.
SH 332:19 Jesus
Jesus demonstrated Christ; he proved that Christ
is the divine idea of God – the Holy Ghost,
or Comforter, revealing the divine Principle,
Love, and leading into all truth.
SH 497:5 We
We acknowledge and adore one supreme and in-
finite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the
Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God’s
image and likeness.
SH 271:20-22, 26-29 (to 1st .)
Our Master said, “But the Comforter . . . shall
teach you all things.” When the Science of Christianity
appears, it will lead you into all truth.
Those, who are willing to leave their nets or to cast
them on the right side for Truth, have the opportunity
now, as aforetime, to learn and to practise
Christian healing.
