Love, affection, forgiveness

Wednesday, 3/18/15 Readings, 2nd Church Berkeley
SH John 8:1-11
1 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. 2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. 3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, 4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? 6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. 7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. 8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. 9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? 11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
SH Matt. 18:21, 22
21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? 22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
SH Mark 11:24 1st What, 25
24 …What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. 25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
SH Luke 17:3, 4
3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. 4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.
SH John 13:34 (to 1st ;)
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another;
SH Gen. 50:14-21
14 And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father. 15 And when Joseph’s brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him. 16 And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying, 17 So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him. 18 And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants. 19 And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? 20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. 21 Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones.
SH Col. 3:2
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
SH Heb. 13:1, 2 (to 1st :), 5
1 Let brotherly love continue. 2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: 5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
SH Rom. 12:10
10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
SH Gal. 6:1, 2
1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. 2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
SH Gal. 5:25
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
SH 5:14-18
Saints and sinners get their full award, but not always
in this world. The followers of Christ drank his cup.
Ingratitude and persecution filled it to the brim; but God
pours the riches of His love into the understanding and
affections, giving us strength according to our day.
SH 8:28-30
We should examine ourselves and learn what is the
affection and purpose of the heart, for in this way
only can we learn what we honestly are.
SH 1:6-9
Prayer, watching, and working, combined with self-im-
molation, are God’s gracious means for accomplishing
whatever has been successfully done for the Christian-
ization and health of mankind.
SH 9:5-7
The test of all prayer lies in the answer to these
questions: Do we love our neighbor better because of
this asking?
SH 15:26-27
Self-forgetfulness,
purity, and affection are constant prayers.
SH 51:28-5, 19-23
Jesus was unselfish. His spirituality separated him
from sensuousness, and caused the selfish materialist
to hate him; but it was this spirituality which enabled
Jesus to heal the sick, cast out evil, and raise the
dead.
From early boyhood he was about his “Father’s busi-
ness.” His pursuits lay far apart from theirs. His mas-
ter was Spirit; their master was matter. He
served God; they served mammon. His affec-
tions were pure;
His consummate example was for the salvation of us
all, but only through doing the works which he did and
taught others to do. His purpose in healing
was not alone to restore health, but to demon-
strate his divine Principle.
SH 54:1
Through the
magnitude of his human life, he demonstrated the divine
Life. Out of the amplitude of his pure affection, he de-
fined Love. With the affluence of Truth, he vanquished
error. The world acknowledged not his righteousness,
seeing it not; but earth received the harmony his glorified
example introduced.
SH 6:3-5
Divine Love corrects and governs man. Men may
pardon, but this divine Principle alone reforms the
sinner.
SH 17:7 (only)
_And Love is reflected in love;
SH 11:1 Jesus’
Jesus’ prayer,
“Forgive us our debts,” specified also the terms of
forgiveness. When forgiving the adulterous woman he
said, “Go, and sin no more.
SH 60:24
An ill-attuned ear calls discord harmony, not appreciat-
ing concord. So physical sense, not discerning the true
happiness of being, places it on a false basis.
Science will correct the discord, and teach us
life’s sweeter harmonies.
SH 65:7-8
If the foundations of human affection are consistent
with progress, they will be strong and enduring.
SH 102:31-2
Christian
Science despoils the kingdom of evil, and pre-eminently
promotes affection and virtue in families and therefore
in the community.
SH 115:12-3
SCIENTIFIC TRANSLATION OF IMMORTAL MIND
GOD: Divine Principle, Life, Truth, Love,
Soul, Spirit, Mind.
MAN: God’s spiritual idea, individual, per-
fect, eternal.
IDEA: An image in Mind; the immediate
object of understanding. – Webster.
SCIENTIFIC TRANSLATION OF MORTAL MIND
PHYSICAL. Evil beliefs, passions and appetites, fear,
depraved will, self-justification, pride, envy, de-
ceit, hatred, revenge, sin, sickness, disease,
death.
Second Degree: Evil beliefs disappearing.
MORAL. Humanity, honesty, affection, com-
passion, hope, faith, meekness, temperance.
Third Degree: Understanding.
SPIRITUAL. Wisdom, purity, spiritual understanding,
spiritual power, love, health, holiness.
SH 183:21-22
Spirit. Divine Mind rightly demands man’s entire obe-
dience, affection, and strength.
SH 589:19-22
JOSEPH. A corporeal mortal; a higher sense of Truth
rebuking mortal belief, or error, and showing the immor-
tality and supremacy of Truth; pure affection blessing
its enemies.
SH 365:19-24
If the Scientist has enough Christly affection to
win his own pardon, and such commendation as the Mag-
dalen gained from Jesus, then he is Christian enough to
practise scientifically and deal with his patients compas-
sionately; and the result will correspond with the spiritual
intent.
SH 391:29-32
Mentally contradict every complaint from the body,
and rise to the true consciousness of Life as
Love, – as all that is pure, and bearing the
fruits of Spirit.
SH 239:16
To ascertain our progress, we must learn where our
affections are placed and whom we acknowledge and
obey as God. If divine Love is becoming
nearer, dearer, and more real to us, matter is
then submitting to Spirit. The objects we pursue and
the spirit we manifest reveal our standpoint, and show
what we are winning.

Repentance, spiritual baptism, and regeneration

Readings, 2nd Church Berkeley, 3/11/15
SH Matt. 3:1-3, 5, 6, 11, 13-17
1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, 2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, 6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: 13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. 16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
SH Matt. 4:17
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
SH Matt. 9:10-13
10 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? 12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. 13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
SH Luke 18:9-14
9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
SH Luke 19:10
10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
SH Acts 3:18 1st those, 19
18 …those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. 19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.
SH Isa. 40:31
31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
SH Titus 3:1 1st be, 2-5
1 …be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, 2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. 3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. 4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
SH II Pet. 3:9
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
SH 113:5-6
The vital part,
the heart and soul of Christian Science, is Love.
SH 24:11-13
He to whom “the arm of the Lord” is revealed will
believe our report, and rise into newness of life with re-
generation.
SH 367:3-16
The tender word and Christian
encouragement of an invalid, pitiful patience
with his fears and the removal of them, are better than
hecatombs of gushing theories, stereotyped borrowed
speeches, and the doling of arguments, which are but so
many parodies on legitimate Christian Science, aflame
with divine Love.
This is what is meant by seeking Truth, Christ, not
“for the loaves and fishes,” nor, like the Pharisee, with
the arrogance of rank and display of scholar-
ship, but like Mary Magdalene, from the sum-
mit of devout consecration, with the oil of gladness and
the perfume of gratitude, with tears of repentance and
with those hairs all numbered by the Father.
SH 19:17-24
Every pang of repentance and suffering, every effort
for reform, every good thought and deed, will help us to
understand Jesus’ atonement for sin and aid
its efficacy; but if the sinner continues to pray
and repent, sin and be sorry, he has little part in the atone-
ment,- in the at-one-ment with God,- for he lacks the
practical repentance, which reforms the heart and enables
man to do the will of wisdom.
SH 448:3-5
When the Publican’s wail
went out to the great heart of Love, it won his
humble desire.
SH 581:23-24
BAPTISM. Purification by Spirit; submergence in
Spirit.
SH 329:22 Science
Science is a
divine demand, not a human. Always right,
its divine Principle never repents, but main-
tains the claim of Truth by quenching error.
The pardon of divine mercy is the destruction of error. If
men understood their real spiritual source to be all bless-
edness, they would struggle for recourse to the spiritual
and be at peace; but the deeper the error into which mor-
tal mind is plunged, the more intense the opposition to
spirituality, till error yields to Truth.
SH 558:10
To mortal sense
Science seems at first obscure, abstract, and
dark; but a bright promise crowns its brow.
When understood, it is Truth’s prism and praise. When
you look it fairly in the face, you can heal by its means,
and it has for you a light above the sun, for God “is the
light thereof.” Its feet are pillars of fire, foundations
of Truth and Love. It brings the baptism of the Holy
Ghost, whose flames of Truth were prophetically de-
scribed by John the Baptist as consuming error.
SH 242:1-14
Through repentance, spiritual
baptism, and regeneration, mortals put off their material
beliefs and false individuality. It is only a
question of time when “they shall all know
Me [God], from the least of them unto the greatest.”
Denial of the claims of matter is a great step towards
the joys of Spirit, towards human freedom and the final
triumph over the body.
There is but one way to heaven, harmony, and Christ
in divine Science shows us this way. It is to know no
other reality – to have no other conscious-
ness of life – than good, God and His reflec-
tion, and to rise superior to the so-called pain and pleasure
of the senses.
SH 522:29-1
Does Life,
Truth, and Love produce death, error, and hatred? Does
the creator condemn His own creation? Does the un-
erring Principle of divine law change or repent? It can-
not be so.
SH 74:29-30
In Christian Science there is never a retrograde step,
never a return to positions outgrown.
SH 405:30
Belief in material suffering causes mortals to
retreat from their error, to flee from body to Spirit, and
to appeal to divine sources outside of themselves.
SH 203:7
If God were understood instead of being merely be-
lieved, this understanding would establish health. The
accusation of the rabbis, “He made himself
the Son of God,” was really the justification
of Jesus, for to the Christian the only true
spirit is Godlike. This thought incites to a more exalted
worship and self-abnegation. Spiritual perception brings
out the possibilities of being, destroys reliance on aught
but God, and so makes man the image of his Maker in
deed and in truth.

SH Ezek. 34:1, 12, 22 (to 1st ;)
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 12 As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. 22 Therefore will I save my flock, and they shall no more be a prey;
SH Deut. 15:7, 8
7 If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: 8 But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth.
SH Matt. 4:23
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
SH Matt. 5:1, 2

SH Matt. 6:6 1st when, 8 1st your, 31, 32 2nd for, 33
6 …when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 8 …your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. 31 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 32 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 33 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
SH Mark 2:16, 17, 23-27
16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners? 17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. 23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. 24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? 25 And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him? 26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him? 27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
SH Acts 2:1, 42, 44, 45
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
SH Acts 4:33-35
33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. 34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, 35 And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
SH Heb. 4:16
16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
SH Phil. 4:19 1st my
19 …my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

SH 4:3-5
What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire
for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness,
love, and good deeds.
SH 7:23 The
The “di-
vine ear” is not an auditory nerve. It is the all-hearing
and all-knowing Mind, to whom each need of man is
always known and by whom it will be supplied.
SH 13:13
sires increase them? Do we gain the omnipotent ear
sooner by words than by thoughts? Even if prayer is
sincere, God knows our need before we tell Him or our
fellow-beings about it. If we cherish the desire hon-
estly and silently and humbly, God will bless it, and
we shall incur less risk of overwhelming our real
wishes with a torrent of words.
SH 11:27
Prayer cannot change the unalterable
Truth, nor can prayer alone give us an understanding
of Truth; but prayer, coupled with a fervent habitual
desire to know and do the will of God, will bring us
into all Truth. Such a desire has little need of audible
expression.
SH 9:6-7
questions: Do we love our neighbor better because of
this asking?
SH 34:5-9
that Truth has come to the understanding? If Christ,
Truth, has come to us in demonstration, no other com-
memoration is requisite, for demonstration is Immanuel,
or God with us; and if a friend be with us, why need we
memorials of that friend?
SH 95:6-10
We approach
God, or Life, in proportion to our spirituality, our fidel-
ity to Truth and Love; and in that ratio we know all
human need and are able to discern the thought of the
sick and the sinning for the purpose of healing them.
SH 151:4-7
Infinite Mind could not possibly create
a remedy outside of itself, but erring, finite, human mind
has an absolute need of something beyond itself for its
redemption and healing.
SH 323:13-14, 19-24, 32-2
In order to apprehend more, we must put into prac-
tice what we already know.
When the sick or the sinning awake to realize their need
of what they have not, they will be receptive of divine
Science, which gravitates towards Soul and away from
material sense, removes thought from the body, and ele-
vates even mortal mind to the contemplation of some-
thing better than disease or sin.
Willingness to become as a little child and
to leave the old for the new, renders thought receptive of
the advanced idea.
SH 170:14
The demands of Truth are spiritual, and reach the
body through Mind. The best interpreter of man’s needs
said: “Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat,
or what ye shall drink.
SH 371:22-25
No impossible thing do I ask when urging
the claims of Christian Science; but because
this teaching is in advance of the age, we
should not deny our need of its spiritual unfoldment.
SH 374:6
Love. Because mortal mind seems to be conscious, the
sick say: “How can my mind cause a disease
I never thought of and knew nothing about,
until it appeared on my body?” The author has an-
swered this question in her explanation of disease as origi-
nating in human belief before it is consciously apparent
on the body, which is in fact the objective state of mortal
mind, though it is called matter. This mortal blindness
and its sharp consequences show our need of divine meta-
physics. Through immortal Mind, or Truth, we can
destroy all ills which proceed from mortal mind.
SH 346:9-13
The nothingness of nothing is plain; but we
need to understand that error is nothing, and that its
nothingness is not saved, but must be demonstrated in
order to prove the somethingness – yea, the allness –
of Truth.
SH 490:12
The Science of Mind needs to be understood. Until
it is understood, mortals are more or less deprived of
Truth. Human theories are helpless to make
man harmonious or immortal, since he is so
already, according to Christian Science. Our only need
is to know this and reduce to practice the real man’s di-
vine Principle, Love
SH 494:10-11

human need.

1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, 2 Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. 3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. 4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. 5 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.
SH II Cor. 4:16 1st though, 17, 18
16 …though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; 18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
SH II Cor. 5:1, 6-8, 16 1st henceforth, 17
1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 16 …henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
SH Luke 3:21, 22
21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, 22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
SH Luke 8:1 (to 1st :), 43, 44, 47, 48
1 And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: 43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, 44 Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. 48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
SH Luke 4:38 3rd And, 39
38 And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. 39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.
SH II Cor. 6:16
16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
SH Rev. 21:4, 5 1st I (to 1st .)
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 5 .
SH 573:29
Take heart, dear sufferer, for this reality of being will
surely appear sometime and in some way. There will
be no more pain, and all tears will be wiped away. When
you read this, remember Jesus’ words, “The kingdom of
God is within you.” This spiritual consciousness is
therefore a present possibility.
SH 148:25-26
Physiology exalts matter, dethrones Mind, and claims
to rule man by material law, instead of spiritual.
SH 149:4-5, 28-29
The more excellent way is divine
Science in every case.
Whatever guides thought spiritually benefits
mind and body.
SH 414:19-28
The Christian Scien-
tist’s argument rests on the Christianly scientific basis of
being. The Scripture declares, “The Lord He is God
[good]; there is none else beside Him.” Even so, harmony
is universal, and discord is unreal. Christian Science de-
clares that Mind is substance, also that matter neither
feels, suffers, nor enjoys. Hold these points strongly in
view. Keep in mind the verity of being, – that man is
the image and likeness of God, in whom all being is
painless and permanent.
SH 421:15-21
Insist vehe-
mently on the great fact which covers the whole ground,
that God, Spirit, is all, and that there is none beside
Him. There is no disease. When the supposed suffer-
ing is gone from mortal mind, there can be no pain; and
when the fear is destroyed, the inflammation will sub-
side.
SH 391:9-12
Banish the belief that you can possi-
bly entertain a single intruding pain which can-
not be ruled out by the might of Mind, and in this way
you can prevent the development of pain in the body.
SH 462:25-1
The anatomy of Christian
Science teaches when and how to probe the self-in-
flicted wounds of selfishness, malice, envy, and hate. It
teaches the control of mad ambition. It unfolds the
hallowed influences of unselfishness, philanthropy, spir-
itual love. It urges the government of the body both
in health and in sickness. The Christian Scientist,
through understanding mental anatomy, discerns and
deals with the real cause of disease.
SH 428:19
We must realize the ability of mental
might to offset human misconceptions and to replace them
with the life which is spiritual, not material.
SH 346:19-20, 21-25
We treat error through the understanding of Truth,
because Truth is error’s antidote.
When
a sufferer is convinced that there is no reality
in his belief of pain, – because matter has no sensation,
hence pain in matter is a false belief, – how can he suffer
longer?
SH 261:8-11
The effect of mortal mind on health and happiness is
seen in this: If one turns away from the body with such
absorbed interest as to forget it, the body
experiences no pain.
SH 298:13-18
Spiritual sense, contradicting the material senses, in-
volves intuition, hope, faith, understanding, fruition, real-
ity. Material sense expresses the belief that mind is in
matter. This human belief, alternating between a sense
of pleasure and pain, hope and fear, life and death, never
reaches beyond the boundary of the mortal or the unreal.
SH 260:31
If we look to the body for pleasure, we find pain; for
Life, we find death; for Truth, we find error; for Spirit,
we find its opposite, matter. Now reverse this action.
Look away from the body into Truth and Love,
the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and
immortality. Hold thought steadfastly to the endur-
ing, the good, and the true, and you will bring these
into your experience proportionably to their occupancy
of your thoughts.
SH 242:9
There is but one way to heaven, harmony, and Christ
in divine Science shows us this way. It is to know no
other reality – to have no other conscious-
ness of life – than good, God and His reflec-
tion, and to rise superior to the so-called pain and pleasure
of the senses.
SH 496:15-19
Hold perpetually this thought, – that it is the spiritual
idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to
demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing,
based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, over-
lying, and encompassing all true being.

God, good, is all

SH Ps. 34:10 1st they
10 …they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.
SH Ps. 66:8
8 O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of his praise to be heard:
SH Ps. 107:1, 8, 14, 20
1 O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. 8 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! 14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder. 20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
SH Ps. 145:3, 4, 7
3 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. 4 One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. 7 They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness.
SH Mark 6:34 1st Jesus
34 …Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.
SH Mark 10:17-23, 26, 27
17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. 19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. 20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. 21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. 22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. 23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved? 27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.
SH Matt. 6:1-4
1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. 2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
SH Matt. 13:47 1st the, 48
47 …the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: 48 Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.
SH Luke 10:38-42
38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. 40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
SH Gal. 5:22 1st the, 23
22 …the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
SH 311:4-6 (to 1st .)
on matter for manifestation, is not Mind. God is Mind:
all that Mind, God, is, or hath made, is good, and He
made all.
SH 587:19-20
GOOD. God; Spirit; omnipotence; omniscience; om-
nipresence;
SH 119:21-24
God is natural good, and is repre-
sented only by the idea of goodness; while evil should be
regarded as unnatural, because it is opposed to the nature
of Spirit, God.
SH 205:15-21
Befogged in error (the error of believing that matter
can be intelligent for good or evil), we can catch clear
glimpses of God only as the mists disperse,
or as they melt into such thinness that we per-
ceive the divine image in some word or deed
which indicates the true idea, – the supremacy and real-
ity of good, the nothingness and unreality of evil.
SH 192:23-24 (to 1st .)
the right scale. The good you do and embody gives you
the only power obtainable.
SH 294:25-26
Man’s genuine selfhood is recognizable only in what is
good and true.
SH 339:8-9
God, Spirit, alone created all, and called it
good.
SH 427:14-16
Nothing can interfere with the
harmony of being nor end the existence of
man in Science.

SH 526:15-17
God pronounced
good all that He created, and the Scriptures
declare that He created all.
SH 213:11-12
Every step towards goodness is a departure from materi-
ality, and is a tendency towards God, Spirit.
SH 233:10-15
How long it must be
before we arrive at the demonstration of scien-
tific being, no man knoweth, – not even “the
Son but the Father;” but the false claim of error con-
tinues its delusions until the goal of goodness is assidu-
ously earned and won.
SH 244:7-12
If we were to derive all our conceptions of man from
what is seen between the cradle and the grave, happi-
ness and goodness would have no abiding-place in man,
and the worms would rob him of the flesh; but Paul
writes: “The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath
made me free from the law of sin and death.
SH 503:20
Immortal and divine Mind presents the idea of God:
first, in light; second, in reflection; third, in spiritual and
immortal forms of beauty and goodness. But
this Mind creates no element nor symbol of
discord and decay. God creates neither erring thought,
mortal life, mutable truth, nor variable love.
SH 515:22-24
All that
God imparts moves in accord with Him, reflecting good-
ness and power.
SH 516:9-12
God fashions all things, after His own likeness. Life
is reflected in existence, Truth in truthfulness, God in
goodness, which impart their own peace and
permanence.
SH 367:30-4
Because Truth is infinite, error should be known as
nothing. Because Truth is omnipotent in goodness,
error, Truth’s opposite, has no might. Evil is but the
counterpoise of nothingness. The greatest wrong is
but a supposititious opposite of the highest right. The
confidence inspired by Science lies in the fact
that Truth is real and error is unreal.
SH 521:5-6
All that is made is
the work of God, and all is good.
SH 304:3-9
It is ignorance and false belief, based on a material
sense of things, which hide spiritual beauty and good-
ness. Understanding this, Paul said: “Nei-
ther death, nor life, . . . nor things present,
nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor
any other creature, shall be able to separate us from
the love of God.
SH 277:7-12
Good cannot result in evil. As God Himself is
good and is Spirit, goodness and spirituality must be im-
mortal. Their opposites, evil and matter, are mortal
error, and error has no creator. If goodness and spirit-
uality are real, evil and materiality are unreal and can-
not be the outcome of an infinite God, good.
SH 103:15
The maximum
of good is the infinite God and His idea, the All-in-all.
Evil is a suppositional lie.
SH 201:7 Truth
Truth
makes a new creature, in whom old things pass away
and “all things are become new.” Passions, selfishness,
false appetites, hatred, fear, all sensuality, yield to spirit-
uality, and the superabundance of being is on the side
of God, good.

Justice and reconciliation

Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015 readings, 2nd Church, Berkeley
SH Deut. 16:20
20 That which is altogether just shalt thou follow, that thou mayest live, and inherit the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
SH Prov. 21:3
3 To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.
SH Amos 5:14, 15 (to 1st :)
14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken. 15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate:
SH II Kings 8:1-6
1 Then spake Elisha unto the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and thine household, and sojourn wheresoever thou canst sojourn: for the LORD hath called for a famine; and it shall also come upon the land seven years. 2 And the woman arose, and did after the saying of the man of God: and she went with her household, and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years. 3 And it came to pass at the seven years’ end, that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines: and she went forth to cry unto the king for her house and for her land. 4 And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the great things that Elisha hath done. 5 And it came to pass, as he was telling the king how he had restored a dead body to life, that, behold, the woman, whose son he had restored to life, cried to the king for her house and for her land. And Gehazi said, My lord, O king, this is the woman, and this is her son, whom Elisha restored to life. 6 And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed unto her a certain officer, saying, Restore all that was hers, and all the fruits of the field since the day that she left the land, even until now.
SH Num. 27:1-8
1 Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph: and these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah. 2 And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying, 3 Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons. 4 Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father. 5 And Moses brought their cause before the LORD. 6 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 7 The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them. 8 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.
SH Acts 10:34 1st God
34 …God is no respecter of persons:
SH Isa. 54:4 (to 2nd ;), 4 3rd for
4 Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; 4 …for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more.
SH Matt. 5:21-24
21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: 22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. 23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
SH Luke 6:36-38
36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. 37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: 38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
SH John 7:24
24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
SH II Cor. 5:19
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
SH Mic. 6:8
8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
SH 36:19-21
A selfish and limited mind may be unjust, but the un-
limited and divine Mind is the immortal law of justice as
well as of mercy.
SH 542:19-21
Let Truth uncover and destroy error in God’s
own way, and let human justice pattern the
divine.
SH 64:1
Want of uniform justice is a crying evil caused by the
selfishness and inhumanity of man. Our forefathers
exercised their faith in the direction taught by the Apostle
James, when he said: “Pure religion and undefiled before
God and the Father, is this, To visit the fatherless and
widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted
from the world.
SH 224:22-25
A higher and more practical Christianity, demonstrat-
ing justice and meeting the needs of mortals in sickness
and in health, stands at the door of this age, knocking
for admission.
SH 238:29-30
To reconstruct timid justice and place the fact above the
falsehood, is the work of time.
SH 459:8-11
Judge not the
future advancement of Christian Science by the steps
already taken, lest you yourself be condemned for fail-
ing to take the first step.
SH 293:24-28
The manifestations of evil, which counterfeit
divine justice, are called in the Scriptures, “The anger
of the Lord.” In reality, they show the self-destruction
of error or matter and point to matter’s opposite, the
strength and permanency of Spirit.
SH 390:12-18
When the first symptoms of disease appear, dispute the
testimony of the material senses with divine Science. Let
your higher sense of justice destroy the false
process of mortal opinions which you name
law, and then you will not be confined to a sick-room nor
laid upon a bed of suffering in payment of the last far-
thing, the last penalty demanded by error.
SH 391:17-22 (to 1st .)
Justice is the moral signification of law. Injustice de-
clares the absence of law. When the body is supposed
to say, “I am sick,” never plead guilty. Since
matter cannot talk, it must be mortal mind
which speaks; therefore meet the intimation with a pro-
test.
SH 465:14-15
The attributes of God are justice,
mercy, wisdom, goodness, and so on.
SH 537:9-13
A knowledge of evil was never the essence of divin-
ity or manhood. In the first chapter of Genesis, evil
has no local habitation nor name. Crea-
tion is there represented as spiritual, entire,
and good.
SH 538:7-10
Radiant with mercy and justice, the sword of Truth
gleams afar and indicates the infinite distance between
Truth and error, between the material and spiritual, –
the unreal and the real.
SH 19:5
Even Christ cannot reconcile Truth to error, for
Truth and error are irreconcilable. Jesus aided in recon-
ciling man to God by giving man a truer sense of Love,
the divine Principle of Jesus’ teachings, and this truer
sense of Love redeems man from the law of matter,
sin, and death by the law of Spirit,- the law of divine
Love.
SH 45:10-13
Paul writes: “For if, when we were
enemies, we were reconciled to God by the [seeming] death
of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved
by his life.
SH 110:13-17
In following these leadings of scientific revelation,
the Bible was my only textbook. The Scriptures were
illumined; reason and revelation were recon-
ciled, and afterwards the truth of Christian
Science was demonstrated.

14 …Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 21 …This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
SH Matt. 25:31, 32-37, 40
31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: 32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

The physical healing of Christian Science results
now, as in Jesus’ time, from the operation of divine
Principle, before which sin and disease lose their real-
ity in human consciousness and disappear as naturally
and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and
sin to reformation. Now, as then, these mighty works
are not supernatural, but supremely natural. They are
the sign of Immanuel, or “God with us,” a divine
influence ever present in human consciousness and re-
peating itself, coming now as was promised aforetime,
To preach deliverance to the captives [of sense],
And recovering of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty them that are bruised.
SH 150:12-17
Now, as then,
signs and wonders are wrought in the metaphysical heal-
ing of physical disease; but these signs are only to demon-
strate its divine origin, – to attest the reality of the higher
mission of the Christ-power to take away the sins of the
world.
SH 227:14-16, 17-18 All, 18-20
Discerning the rights of man, we cannot fail to fore-
see the doom of all oppression. Slavery is not the legiti-
mate state of man.
All men should
be free.
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is lib-
erty.” Love and Truth make free, but evil and error
lead into captivity.
SH 227:30, 21-26
If God had instituted material laws to govern man,
disobedience to which would have made man ill, Jesus
would not have disregarded those laws by healing in
direct opposition to them and in defiance of all material
conditions.
Christian Science raises the standard of liberty and
cries: “Follow me! Escape from the bondage of sick-
ness, sin, and death!” Jesus marked out the
way. Citizens of the world, accept the “glori-
ous liberty of the children of God,” and be free! This
is your divine right.
SH 495:6-13
If sickness is true or the idea of Truth, you cannot
destroy sickness, and it would be absurd to try. Then
classify sickness and error as our Master did,
when he spoke of the sick, “whom Satan hath
bound,” and find a sovereign antidote for error in the life-
giving power of Truth acting on human belief, a power
which opens the prison doors to such as are bound, and
sets the captive free physically and morally.
SH 251:30-32
Inharmonious beliefs, which
rob Mind, calling it matter, and deify their
own notions, imprison themselves in what they create.
SH 252:8
A knowledge of
error and of its operations must precede that
understanding of Truth which destroys error,
until the entire mortal, material error finally disappears,
and the eternal verity, man created by and of Spirit,
is understood and recognized as the true likeness of his
Maker.
SH 202:6-14
If men would bring to bear upon the study of the
Science of Mind half the faith they bestow upon the so-
called pains and pleasures of material sense,
they would not go on from bad to worse,
until disciplined by the prison and the scaffold; but
the whole human family would be redeemed through
the merits of Christ, – through the perception and ac-
ceptance of Truth. For this glorious result Christian
Science lights the torch of spiritual understanding.
SH 224:28-4
Truth brings the elements of liberty. On its banner
is the Soul-inspired motto, “Slavery is abolished.” The
power of God brings deliverance to the cap-
tive. No power can withstand divine Love.
What is this supposed power, which opposes itself to God?
Whence cometh it? What is it that binds man with iron
shackles to sin, sickness, and death? Whatever enslaves
man is opposed to the divine government. Truth makes
man free.

No drought in Mind

Wed., 1/28/15 readings, 2nd Church, Berkeley
SH Ps. 107:1-7, 9
1 O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. 2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy; 3 And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south. 4 They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in. 5 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. 6 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses. 7 And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation. 9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
SH Gen. 21:9, 10, 12-20
9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. 10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac. 12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. 13 And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed. 14 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. 15 And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. 16 And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow shot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept. 17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation. 19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink. 20 And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.

Spirit imparts the understanding which uplifts con-
sciousness and leads into all truth. The Psalmist saith:
“The Lord on high is mightier than the noise
of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of
the sea.” Spiritual sense is the discernment of spiritual
good. Understanding is the line of demarcation between
the real and unreal. Spiritual understanding unfolds
Mind, – Life, Truth, and Love, – and demonstrates the
divine sense, giving the spiritual proof of the universe in
Christian Science.
This understanding is not intellectual, is not the result
of scholarly attainments; it is the reality of all things
brought to light.

SH 234:4-8
Whatever inspires with wisdom, Truth, or Love – be

proper channels, and unfolds these thoughts,

in order that the purpose may appear.

God saw that it was good.
SH 547:25-8
The true the-
ory of the universe, including man, is not in
material history but in spiritual development.
Inspired thought relinquishes a material, sensual, and
mortal theory of the universe, and adopts the spiritual and
immortal.
It is this spiritual perception of Scripture, which lifts
humanity out of disease and death and inspires faith.
“The Spirit and the bride say, Come! . . . and whoso-
ever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Christian
Science separates error from truth, and breathes
through the sacred pages the spiritual sense of
life, substance, and intelligence. In this Science, we dis-
cover man in the image and likeness of God. We see that
man has never lost his spiritual estate and his eternal
harmony.

Seedtime and Harvest

Wed., 1/14/15 readings, 2nd Church, Berkeley
SH Gen. 8:22
22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
SH Isa. 51:16
16 And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.
SH Isa. 65:21-23
21 And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. 22 They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands. 23 They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them.
SH Luke 4:14 1st Jesus (to 1st :)
14 …Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee:
SH Luke 8:4-8 (to 1st .), 11-15
4 And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable: 5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. 6 And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. 7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. 8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
SH Matt. 13:24-30
24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: 25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. 26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. 27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? 28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? 29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
SH Matt. 9:37, 38
37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; 38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.
SH Eph. 1:3
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
SH 96:4-11 (to 1st .)
Love will finally mark the hour of harmony, and spir-
itualization will follow, for Love is Spirit. Before error
is wholly destroyed, there will be interrup-
tions of the general material routine. Earth
will become dreary and desolate, but summer and winter,
seedtime and harvest (though in changed forms), will
continue unto the end, – until the final spiritualization of
all things.
SH 66:11-14
but when these decay, Love propagates anew the higher
joys of Spirit, which have no taint of earth. Each suc-
cessive stage of experience unfolds new views of divine
goodness and love.
SH 361:25-28
A germ of in-
finite Truth, though least in the kingdom of heaven is the
higher hope on earth, but it will be rejected and reviled
until God prepares the soil for the seed.
SH 79:9-11
Science must go over the whole
ground, and dig up every seed of error’s sow-
ing.
SH 125:21-24, 25-7
The seasons will come and go with changes of time and
tide, cold and heat, latitude and longitude. The agri-
culturist will find that these changes cannot
affect his crops.
The mariner
will have dominion over the atmosphere and the great
deep, over the fish of the sea and the fowls of the air.
The astronomer will no longer look up to the stars, –
he will look out from them upon the universe; and the
florist will find his flower before its seed.
Thus matter will finally be proved nothing more
than a mortal belief, wholly inadequate to affect a man
through its supposed organic action or supposed exist-
ence. Error will be no longer used in stating truth. The
problem of nothingness, or “dust to dust,” will
be solved, and mortal mind will be without
form and void, for mortality will cease when man beholds
himself God’s reflection, even as man sees his reflection
in a glass.
SH 300:9-22
So far as the scientific statement as to man is under-
stood, it can be proved and will bring to light the true
reflection of God – the real man, or the new man (as
St. Paul has it).
The temporal and unreal never touch the eternal and
real. The mutable and imperfect never touch the im-
mutable and perfect. The inharmonious and
self-destructive never touch the harmonious
and self-existent. These opposite qualities are the tares
and wheat, which never really mingle, though (to mortal
sight) they grow side by side until the harvest; then, Sci-
ence separates the wheat from the tares, through the real-
ization of God as ever present and of man as reflecting
the divine likeness.
SH 348:26-32
I have never supposed the world would immediately
witness the full fruitage of Christian Science, or that sin,
disease, and death would not be believed for
an indefinite time; but this I do aver, that,
as a result of teaching Christian Science, ethics and
temperance have received all impulse, health has been
restored, and longevity increased.
SH 507:18-21, 22
The
tree and herb do not yield fruit because of any propagat-
ing power of their own, but because they reflect the Mind
which includes all.
The scientific divine creation
declares immortal Mind and the universe created by God.
SH 508:14-16
The seed within itself is
the pure thought emanating from divine
Mind.
SH 511:1-4
This Mind forms ideas, its
own images, subdivides and radiates their borrowed light,
intelligence, and so explains the Scripture phrase, “whose
seed is in itself.
SH 520:16-20 (to :), 23-26
Genesis ii. 4, 5. These are the generations of the heavens
and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the
Lord God [Jehovah] made the earth and the heavens, and
every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every
herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God [Jehovah]
Here is the emphatic declaration that God creates all
through Mind, not through matter, – that the plant
grows, not because of seed or soil, but because
growth is the eternal mandate of Mind.
SH 270:31-1
The life of Christ Jesus was not miraculous, but it was
indigenous to his spirituality, – the good soil wherein the
seed of Truth springs up and bears much fruit.
SH 535:1-5
The seed of Truth and
the seed of error, of belief and of understanding, – yea,
the seed of Spirit and the seed of matter, – are the wheat
and tares which time will separate, the one to be burned,
the other to be garnered into heavenly places.

Yielding to the touch of Truth

Wed., 1/7/15 Readings, 2nd Church, Berkeley
SH Mark 1:14 1st Jesus, 15 (to 1st :)
14 …Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand:
SH Mark 3:8-10
8 And from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him. 9 And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him. 10 For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues.
SH Matt. 14:23-32, 34-36
23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. 28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? 32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. 34 And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased; 36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
SH Luke 8:43-48
43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, 44 Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. 45 And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 46 And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. 48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
SH Mark 8:22-25
22 And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him. 23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. 24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking. 25 After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.
SH Mark 10:13, 14
13 And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
SH Luke 6:19
19 And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.
SH 86:1-6
Jesus once asked, “Who touched me?” Supposing
this inquiry to be occasioned by physical contact alone,
his disciples answered, “The multitude throng
thee.” Jesus knew, as others did not, that
it was not matter, but mortal mind, whose touch called
for aid.
SH 210:11-16
Knowing that Soul and its attributes were forever
manifested through man, the Master healed the sick,
gave sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, feet to the
lame, thus bringing to light the scientific action of the
divine Mind on human minds and bodies and giving
a better understanding of Soul and salvation.
SH 142:7-10
We
must seek the undivided garment, the whole Christ, as our
first proof of Christianity, for Christ, Truth, alone can
furnish us with absolute evidence.
SH 242:25-26
The divine Science of man is woven into one web of
consistency without seam or rent.
SH 109:32
The three great verities of Spirit, omnipotence, omni-
presence, omniscience, – Spirit possessing all power,
filling all space, constituting all Science, – contradict
forever the belief that matter can be actual.
These eternal verities reveal primeval exist-
ence as the radiant reality of God’s creation,
in which all that He has made is pronounced by His wis-
dom good.
SH 131:18
Jesus once
said: “I thank Thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and
earth, that Thou hast hid these things from the wise
and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even
so, Father, for so it seemed good in Thy sight.” As afore-
time, the spirit of the Christ, which taketh away the cere-
monies and doctrines of men, is not accepted until the
hearts of men are made ready for it.
SH 110:25
Jesus demonstrated the power of Christian Science to
heal mortal minds and bodies. But this power was lost
sight of, and must again be spiritually dis-
cerned, taught, and demonstrated according
to Christ’s command, with “signs following.”
Its Science must be apprehended by as many as believe
on Christ and spiritually understand Truth.
SH 292:4-6 Divine
Divine Science alone
can compass the heights and depths of being and reveal
the infinite.
SH 299:26
Corporeal sense, or error, may seem to hide Truth,
health, harmony, and Science, as the mist obscures the
sun or the mountain; but Science, the sunshine of Truth,
will melt away the shadow and reveal the celestial
peaks.
SH 517:15-17, 18
The world believes in many persons; but if God is per-
sonal, there is but one person, because there is but one
God.
God has countless ideas, and
they all have one Principle and parentage. The only
proper symbol of God as person is Mind’s infinite ideal.
What is this ideal? Who shall behold it? This ideal
is God’s own image, spiritual and infinite. Even eternity
can never reveal the whole of God, since there is no limit
to infinitude or to its reflections.
SH 450:15-22
Some people yield slowly to the touch of Truth. Few
yield without a struggle, and many are reluctant to ac-
knowledge that they have yielded; but un-
less this admission is made, evil will boast
itself above good. The Christian Scientist has enlisted
to lessen evil, disease, and death; and he will overcome
them by understanding their nothingness and the allness
of God, or good.
SH 170:22
Spiritual causation is the one question to be considered,
for more than all others spiritual causation relates to
human progress. The age seems ready to
approach this subject, to ponder somewhat
the supremacy of Spirit, and at least to touch the hem
of Truth’s garment.
