The seekers of the light are one

Readings, 11/11/15, Second Church, Berkeley CA
SH I Cor. 8:6 1st to
6 …to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
SH John 10:22-25, 30
22 And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter. 23 And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon’s porch. 24 Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. 25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me. 30 I and my Father are one.

SH John 6:51 (to 2nd :)
51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever:
SH John 17:5, 6, 9 1st I pray, 11 1st Holy, 16, 17, 20-23
5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. 6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. 9 …I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. 11 …Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. 20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
SH Eph. 4:1, 3
1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, 3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
SH Rom. 12:4, 5
4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: 5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
SH I Cor. 10:17
17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.
SH I Cor. 12:13, 25
13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 25 That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.
SH Rom. 8:16, 17 (to 2nd ;)
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ;
SH 465:17-1 Principle
Principle and its idea is one,
and this one is God, omnipotent, omniscient, and omni-
present Being, and His reflection is man and the universe.
SH 18:3-5
Jesus of Nazareth taught and demonstrated
man’s oneness with the Father, and for this we owe him
endless homage.

SH 333:26-31, 32 By
Love. The divine image, idea, or Christ was, is, and
ever will be inseparable from the divine Principle, God.
Jesus referred to this unity of his spiritual identity thus:
“Before Abraham was, I am;” “I and my Father are
one;” “My Father is greater than I.” The one Spirit
includes all identities.
By these sayings Jesus meant, not that the hu-
man Jesus was or is eternal, but that the divine idea or
Christ was and is so and therefore antedated Abraham;
not that the corporeal Jesus was one with the
Father, but that the spiritual idea, Christ,
dwells forever in the bosom of the Father, God, from
which it illumines heaven and earth; not that the Father
is greater than Spirit, which is God, but greater, infinitely
greater, than the fleshly Jesus, whose earthly career was
brief.
SH 334:12
This dual personality of the
unseen and the seen, the spiritual and mate-
rial, the eternal Christ and the corporeal Jesus manifest
in flesh, continued until the Master’s ascension, when
the human, material concept, or Jesus, disappeared,
while the spiritual self, or Christ, continues to exist in
the eternal order of divine Science, taking away the sins
of the world, as the Christ has always done, even before
the human Jesus was incarnate to mortal eyes.
SH 331:26 Life
Life, Truth, and Love constitute the triune Person
called God, – that is, the triply divine Principle, Love.
They represent a trinity in unity, three in
one, – the same in essence, though multi-
form in office: God the Father-Mother; Christ the spirit-
ual idea of sonship; divine Science or the Holy Comforter.
These three express in divine Science the threefold, essen-
tial nature of the infinite. They also indicate the divine
Principle of scientific being, the intelligent relation of God
to man and the universe.

SH 361:6-18
The Jew who believes in the First Commandment is a
monotheist; he has one omnipresent God. Thus the Jew
unites with the Christian’s doctrine that God is come and
is present now and forever. The Christian who believes
in the First Commandment is a monotheist. Thus he
virtually unites with the Jew’s belief in one God, and
recognizes that Jesus Christ is not God, as Jesus himself
declared, but is the Son of God. This declaration of
Jesus, understood, conflicts not at all with another of his
sayings: “I and my Father are one,” – that is, one in
quality, not in quantity. As a drop of water is one with
the ocean, a ray of light one with the sun, even so God
and man, Father and son, are one in being.
SH 135:21-32
The unity of Science and Christianity
It has been said, and truly, that Christianity must be
Science, and Science must be Christianity, else one or the
other is false and useless; but neither is unim-
portant or untrue, and they are alike in demon-
stration. This proves the one to be identical
with the other. Christianity as Jesus taught it was not
a creed, nor a system of ceremonies, nor a special gift
from a ritualistic Jehovah; but it was the demonstration
of divine Love casting out error and healing the sick,
not merely in the name of Christ, or Truth, but in demon-
stration of Truth, as must be the case in the cycles of
SH 306:8, 18-19
If God, who is Life, were parted for a
moment from His reflection, man, during that
moment there would be no divinity reflected.
The Ego would be unexpressed, and the Father would be
childless, – no Father.
But man cannot be sep-
arated for an instant from God, if man reflects God.
SH 336:25-26 God, 28-30
God, the divine Principle of man, and man in
God’s likeness are inseparable, harmonious, and eternal.
God
and man are not the same, but in the order of divine Sci-
ence, God and man coexist and are eternal.

All beings moving in harmony

Wednesday (2nd Church Berkeley) readings, inspired by an article in the Christian Science Sentinel – http://sentinel.christianscience.com/blogs/living-christian-science-today/all-creatures-moving-in-harmony
SH Dan. 3:8 1st at, 9, 12, 14, 15 2nd if ye, 16-18, 20, 24, 25, 27, 28, 30
8 …at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and accused the Jews. 9 They spake and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live for ever. 12 There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. 14 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, do not ye serve my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up? 15 …if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands? 16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. 17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. 18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. 20 And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. 24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. 25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God. 27 And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king’s counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them. 28 Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God. 30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, in the province of Babylon.
SH Acts 28:3 1st when, 5
3 …when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand. 5 And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.
SH Dan. 6:19-23, 25, 26
19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions. 20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions? 21 Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever. 22 My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt. 23 Then was the king exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God. 25 Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you. 26 I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.
SH Acts 17:28 (to 1st ;)
28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being;
SH Matt. 14:14
14 And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
SH Matt. 18:2-5
2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, 3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
S&H Isa. 11:6
6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.
S&H 514:26-10
Understanding the control which Love held over all,
Daniel felt safe in the lions’ den, and Paul proved the
viper to be harmless. All of God’s creatures
moving in the harmony of Science, are harm-
less, useful, indestructible. A realization of this grand
verity was a source of strength to the ancient worthies.
It supports Christian healing, and enables its possessor
to emulate the example of Jesus. “And God saw that
it was good.”
Patience is symbolized by the tireless worm, creeping
over lofty summits, persevering in its intent. The ser-
pent of God’s creating is neither subtle nor
poisonous, but is a wise idea, charming in its
adroitness, for Love’s ideas are subject to the Mind which
forms them, – the power which changeth the serpent
into a staff.
S&H 129:21-29
We must abandon pharmaceutics, and take up ontol-
ogy, – “the science of real being.” We must look deep
into realism instead of accepting only the out-
ward sense of things. Can we gather peaches
from a pine-tree, or learn from discord the concord of
being? Yet quite as rational are some of the leading
illusions along the path which Science must tread in its
reformatory mission among mortals. The very name,
illusion, points to nothingness.
S&H 191:24-25
The Science of being reveals man and immortality as
based on Spirit.
S&H 321:8-11, 13, 29
When, led by wisdom to cast down his
rod, he saw it become a serpent, Moses fled be-
fore it; but wisdom bade him come back and
handle the serpent, and then Moses’ fear departed.
The serpent, evil, under
wisdom’s bidding, was destroyed through understanding
divine Science, and this proof was a staff upon which to
lean. The illusion of Moses lost its power to alarm him,
when he discovered that what he apparently saw was really
but a phase of mortal belief.
And so it was in the coming
centuries, when the Science of being was demonstrated
by Jesus, who showed his students the power of Mind by
changing water into wine, and taught them how to handle
serpents unharmed, to heal the sick and cast out evils in
proof of the supremacy of Mind.
S&H 460:5
Our system of
Mind-healing rests on the apprehension of the
nature and essence of all being, – on the divine Mind
and Love’s essential qualities. Its pharmacy is moral,
and its medicine is intellectual and spiritual, though used
for physical healing. Yet this most fundamental part of
metaphysics is the one most difficult to understand and
demonstrate, for to the material thought all is material,
till such thought is rectified by Spirit.
S&H 415:17-19, 21
Note how thought makes the face pallid. It either re-
tards the circulation or quickens it, causing a pale or
flushed cheek.
The mus-
cles, moving quickly or slowly and impelled or palsied by
thought, represent the action of all the organs of the hu-
man system, including brain and viscera. To remove
the error producing disorder, you must calm and instruct
mortal mind with immortal Truth.
S&H 144:27-29
When the Science of being is universally understood,
every man will be his own physician, and Truth will be
the universal panacea.
S&H 556:25-30
Ontology receives less attention than physiology. Why?
Because mortal mind must waken to spiritual
life before it cares to solve the problem of
being, hence the author’s experience; but when
that awakening comes, existence will be on a new stand-
point.
S&H 554:4-7
There is no such thing
as mortality, nor are there properly any mortal beings,
because being is immortal, like Deity, – or, rather, being
and Deity are inseparable.
S&H 264:32-1
The universe of Spirit is peopled with spiritual beings,
and its government is divine Science.
S&H 557:10
Christian Sci-
ence reveals harmony as proportionately increasing as the
line of creation rises towards spiritual man, – towards
enlarged understanding and intelligence; but in the line
of the corporeal senses, the less a mortal knows of sin,
disease, and mortality, the better for him, – the less pain
and sorrow are his. When the mist of mortal mind evap-
orates, the curse will be removed which says to woman,
“In sorrow thou shalt bring forth children.” Divine
Science rolls back the clouds of error with the light of
Truth, and lifts the curtain on man as never born and as
never dying, but as coexistent with his creator.

SH John 1:1, 3-5 (to 1st ;)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness;
SH John 3:21 1st he
21 …he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
SH John 8:12
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
SH Matt. 11:1-5
1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. 2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, 3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? 4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: 5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

SH Luke 7:21
21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.
SH John 10:9, 10 1st I

SH II Pet. 1:19
19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
SH Ps. 16:11 (to 1st :)
11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life:
SH 336:25-26 God
God, the divine Principle of man, and man in
God’s likeness are inseparable, harmonious, and eternal.
SH 4:17-22
Simply asking that we may love God will never
make us love Him; but the longing to be better
and holier, expressed in daily watchful-
ness and in striving to assimilate more of
the divine character, will mould and fashion us
anew, until we awake in His likeness.
SH 190:14
Human birth, growth, maturity, and decay are as the
grass springing from the soil with beautiful green blades,
afterwards to wither and return to its native
nothingness. This mortal seeming is temporal;
it never merges into immortal being, but finally disap-
pears, and immortal man, spiritual and eternal, is found
to be the real man.
The Hebrew bard, swayed by mortal thoughts, thus
swept his lyre with saddening strains on human existence:
SH 51:6-11, 12
Jesus could have withdrawn himself from his enemies.
He had power to lay down a human sense of life for his
spiritual identity in the likeness of the divine;
but he allowed men to attempt the destruc-
tion of the mortal body in order that he might furnish
the proof of immortal life.
Jesus could give his temporal life into his
enemies’ hands; but when his earth-mission was accom-
plished, his spiritual life, indestructible and eternal,
was found forever the same. He knew that matter had
no life and that real Life is God; therefore he could no
more be separated from his spiritual Life than God could
be extinguished.
SH 246:1-6
Man is not
a pendulum, swinging between evil and good, joy and
sorrow, sickness and health, life and death.
Life and its faculties are not measured by
calendars. The perfect and immortal are the eternal
likeness of their Maker.
SH 257:32-6
Finite man cannot be the image and
likeness of the infinite God. A mortal, corporeal, or
finite conception of God cannot embrace the glories of
limitless, incorporeal Life and Love. Hence
the unsatisfied human craving for something
better, higher, holier, than is afforded by a
material belief in a physical God and man.
SH 300:31-4
God is re-
vealed only in that which reflects Life, Truth, Love, –
yea, which manifests God’s attributes and power, even
as the human likeness thrown upon the mirror, repeats
the color, form, and action of the person in front of the
mirror.
SH 344:1
It is objected to Christian Science that it claims God
as the only absolute Life and Soul, and man to be His
idea, – that is, His image. It should be
added that this is claimed to represent the
normal, healthful, and sinless condition of man in divine
Science, and that this claim is made because the Scrip-
tures say that God has created man in His own image
and after His likeness. Is it sacrilegious to assume that
God’s likeness is not found in matter, sin, sickness, and
death?
SH 406:13-16 Sin
Sin and sickness will
abate and seem less real as we approach the
scientific period, in which mortal sense is subdued and
all that is unlike the true likeness disappears.
SH 525:12-22
The following translation is from the Icelandic: –
And God said, Let us make man after our mind and
our likeness; and God shaped man after His mind; after
God’s mind shaped He Him; and He shaped them male and
female.
In the Gospel of John, it is declared that all things were
made through the Word of God, “and without Him [the
logos, or word] was not anything made that
was made.” Everything good or worthy, God
made. Whatever is valueless or baneful, He did not
make, – hence its unreality.
SH 531:29-32
The mythologic theory of mate-
rial life at no point resembles the scientifically Christian
record of man as created by Mind in the image and like-
ness of God and having dominion over all the earth.
SH 209:1-2, 5-8, 13
Man, being immortal, has a perfect
indestructible life.
Mind, supreme over all its formations and governing
them all, is the central sun of its own systems of ideas,
the life and light of all its own vast creation;
and man is tributary to divine Mind.
Science which reveals the supremacy of Mind. The im-
manent sense of Mind-power enhances the glory of Mind.
Nearness, not distance, lends enchantment to this view.
SH 491:12-16
It is only
by acknowledging the supremacy of Spirit, which annuls
the claims of matter, that mortals can lay off mortality and
find the indissoluble spiritual link which establishes man
forever in the divine likeness, inseparable from his creator.
SH 516:4-8
God. The substance, Life, intelligence, Truth, and Love,
which constitute Deity, are reflected by His creation;
and when we subordinate the false testimony of the
corporeal senses to the facts of Science, we shall see
this true likeness and reflection everywhere.

9 …Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. 10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac. 11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his son. 12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. 13 And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed. 14 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. 15 And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. 16 And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow shot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept. 17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation. 19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink. 20 And God was with the lad;

1 O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. 2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy; 3 And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south. 4 They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in. 5 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them. 6 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
KJV Ezek. 34:12, 15, 16 (to 1st :)
12 As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. 15 I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord GOD. 16 I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick:
KJV John 10:1-7, 11, 15, 16
1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. 4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. 5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. 6 This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them. 7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. 11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. 15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
KJV 268:1
In the material world, thought has brought to light
with great rapidity many useful wonders. With
like activity have thought’s swift pinions been rising
towards the realm of the real, to the spiritual
cause of those lower things which give im-
pulse to inquiry. Belief in a material basis, from
which may be deduced all rationality, is slowly yielding
to the idea of a metaphysical basis, looking away from
matter to Mind as the cause of every effect. Material-
istic hypotheses challenge metaphysics to meet in final
combat. In this revolutionary period, like the shep-
herd-boy with his sling, woman goes forth to battle with
Goliath.
KJV 121:7
The Chaldean Wisemen read in the stars the fate of
empires and the fortunes of men. Though no higher
revelation than the horoscope was to them dis-
played upon the empyrean, earth and heaven
were bright, and bird and blossom were glad in God’s
perennial and happy sunshine, golden with Truth. So
we have goodness and beauty to gladden the heart; but
man, left to the hypotheses of material sense unexplained
by Science, is as the wandering comet or the desolate
star – “a weary searcher for a viewless home.
KJV 275:10-14, 26 (only)
To grasp the reality and order of being in its Science,
you must begin by reckoning God as the divine Principle
of all that really is. Spirit, Life, Truth, Love,
combine as one, – and are the Scriptural names
for God.
The true understanding of God is spiritual.
KJV 276:12-14, 17
The realization that all inharmony is unreal brings
objects and thoughts into human view in their true light,
and presents them as beautiful and immortal.
If God is admitted to be the only Mind and Life,
there ceases to be any opportunity for sin and death.
When we learn in Science how to be perfect
even as our Father in heaven is perfect,
thought is turned into new and healthy channels, –
towards the contemplation of things immortal and away
from materiality to the Principle of the universe, includ-
ing harmonious man.
KJV 280:9, 25-30
Finite belief can never do justice to Truth in any direc-
tion. Finite belief limits all things, and would compress
Mind, which is infinite, beneath a skull bone. Such be-
lief can neither apprehend nor worship the infinite; and
to accommodate its finite sense of the divisibility of Soul
and substance, it seeks to divide the one Spirit into per-
sons and souls.
Rightly understood, instead of possessing a sentient
material form, man has a sensationless body; and God,
the Soul of man and of all existence, being
perpetual in His own individuality, harmony,
and immortality, imparts and perpetuates these qualities
in man, – through Mind, not matter.
KJV 477:20-22 Identity, 29
Identity is the reflection of Spirit, the re-
flection in multifarious forms of the living Principle,
Love.
Separated from man,
who expresses Soul, Spirit would be a nonentity; man,
divorced from Spirit, would lose his entity. But there is,
there can be, no such division, for man is coexistent with
God.
KJV 303:28-30
Spiritual man is the image or idea of
God, an idea which cannot be lost nor sep-
arated from its divine Principle.
KJV 577:32-18
In the following Psalm one word shows, though faintly,
the light which Christian Science throws on the Scriptures
by substituting for the corporeal sense, the incorporeal
or spiritual sense of Deity: –
[DIVINE LOVE] is my shepherd; I shall not want.
[LOVE] maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
[LOVE] leadeth me beside the still waters.
[LOVE] restoreth my soul [spiritual sense]: [Love] lead-
eth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of
death, I will fear no evil: for [LOVE] is with me; [LOVE’s]
rod and [LOVE’S] staff they comfort me.
[LOVE] prepareth a table before me in the presence of
mine enemies: [LOVE] anointeth my head with oil; my cup
runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of
my life; and I will dwell in the house [the consciousness]
of [LOVE] for ever.

1 And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul: 2 And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; 3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. 20 He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me. 31 As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him. 33 God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect.

34 …when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. 35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
SH Luke 10:29-37
29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? 30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, 34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. 36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? 37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. counsel of the inspired writer.

One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; con-
stitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the
Scripture, “Love thy neighbor as thyself;” annihilates
pagan and Christian idolatry, – whatever is wrong in
social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes;
SH 205:22, 32
When we realize that there is one Mind, the divine law
of loving our neighbor as ourselves is unfolded;
whereas a belief in many ruling minds hinders
man’s normal drift towards the one Mind, one
God, and leads human thought into opposite channels
where selfishness reigns.
When we fully understand our relation to the Divine,
we can have no other Mind but His, – no other Love,
wisdom, or Truth, no other sense of Life, and no con-
sciousness of the existence of matter or error.

My
weary hope tries to realize that happy day, when man shall
recognize the Science of Christ and love his neighbor as
himself, – when he shall realize God’s omnipotence and
the healing power of the divine Love in what it has done
and is doing for mankind. The promises will be ful-
filled.

With
one Father, even God, the whole family of man would
be brethren; and with one Mind and that God, or good,
the brotherhood of man would consist of Love and Truth,
and have unity of Principle and spiritual power which
constitute divine Science.
SH 304:3-9
It is ignorance and false belief, based on a material
sense of things, which hide spiritual beauty and good-
ness. Understanding this, Paul said: “Nei-
ther death, nor life, . . . nor things present,
nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor
any other creature, shall be able to separate us from
the love of God.
SH 566:1-9
As the children of Israel were guided triumphantly
through the Red Sea, the dark ebbing and flowing tides
of human fear, – as they were led through the
wilderness, walking wearily through the great
desert of human hopes, and anticipating the promised
joy, – so shall the spiritual idea guide all right desires
in their passage from sense to Soul, from a material sense
of existence to the spiritual, up to the glory prepared for
them who love God.
SH 467:9
It should be thoroughly understood that all men have one
Mind, one God and Father, one Life, Truth, and Love.
Mankind will become perfect in proportion as this fact
becomes apparent, war will cease and the true brother-
hood of man will be established. Having no other gods,
turning to no other but the one perfect Mind to guide
him, man is the likeness of God, pure and eternal, hav-
ing that Mind which was also in Christ.
SH 559:8-12
The “still, small voice”
of scientific thought reaches over continent and ocean
to the globe’s remotest bound. The inaudible voice of
Truth is, to the human mind, “as when a lion roareth.”
It is heard in the desert and in dark places of fear.
SH 276:4-9
When the divine precepts
are understood, they unfold the foundation of fellowship,
in which one mind is not at war with another, but all have
one Spirit, God, one intelligent source, in accordance with
the Scriptural command: “Let this Mind be in you,
which was also in Christ Jesus.

KJV 15:14-30
In order to pray aright, we must enter into the
closet and shut the door. We must close the lips and
silence the material senses. In the quiet
sanctuary of earnest longings, we must
deny sin and plead God’s allness. We must resolve to
take up the cross, and go forth with honest hearts to
work and watch for wisdom, Truth, and Love. We
must “pray without ceasing.” Such prayer is an-
swered, in so far as we put our desires into practice.
The Master’s injunction is, that we pray in secret and
let our lives attest our sincerity.
Christians rejoice in secret beauty and bounty, hidden
from the world, but known to God. Self-forgetfulness,
purity, and affection are constant prayers.
Practice not profession, understanding not
belief, gain the ear and right hand of omnipotence and
they assuredly call down infinite blessings.
KJV 16:1-2
A great sacrifice of material things must precede this
advanced spiritual understanding.
KJV 598:21-30
“One day is with the Lord as a thousand years.”
(II Peter iii. 8.)
One moment of divine consciousness, or the spiritual
understanding of Life and Love, is a foretaste of eternity.
This exalted view, obtained and retained when the Sci-
ence of being is understood, would bridge over with life
discerned spiritually the interval of death, and man
would be in the full consciousness of his immortality and
eternal harmony, where sin, sickness, and death are un-
known.
KJV 66:11-14
but when these decay, Love propagates anew the higher
joys of Spirit, which have no taint of earth. Each suc-
cessive stage of experience unfolds new views of divine
goodness and love.

demonstrated the inability of corporeality, as well as the
infinite ability of Spirit, thus helping erring
human sense to flee from its own convictions
and seek safety in divine Science.
KJV 445:19-21
Christian Science silences human will, quiets fear with
Truth and Love, and illustrates the unlabored motion
of the divine energy in healing the sick.
KJV 68:27-30
Christian Science presents unfoldment, not accretion;
it manifests no material growth from molecule to mind,
but an impartation of the divine Mind to man
and the universe.
KJV 108:12-18
My conclusions were reached by allowing the evidence
of this revelation to multiply with mathematical certainty
and the lesser demonstration to prove the
greater, as the product of three multiplied by
three, equalling nine, proves conclusively that three times
three duodecillions must be nine duodecillions, – not
a fraction more, not a unit less.
KJV 39:18
“Now,” cried the apostle, “is the accepted time; be-
hold, now is the day of salvation,” – meaning, not that
now men must prepare for a future-world salva-
tion, or safety, but that now is the time in which
to experience that salvation in spirit and in life. Now is
the time for so-called material pains and material pleas-
ures to pass away, for both are unreal, because impossible
in Science. To break this earthly spell, mortals must get
the true idea and divine Principle of all that really exists
and governs the universe harmoniously. This thought is
apprehended slowly, and the interval before its attain-
ment is attended with doubts and defeats as well as
triumphs.
KJV 570:14-18, 23-24
Millions of unprejudiced minds – simple seekers for
Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert – are wait-
ing and watching for rest and drink. Give
them a cup of cold water in Christ’s name,
and never fear the consequences.
Those ready for the blessing
you impart will give thanks.
KJV 223:14-19
The question, “What is Truth,” convulses the world.
Many are ready to meet this inquiry with the assurance
which comes of understanding; but more are
blinded by their old illusions, and try to “give
it pause.” “If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into
the ditch.

But they held their peace. 5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
SH John 5:19
19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
SH John 14:10 1st 4th the
10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
SH John 9:13-16, 24-33
13 They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. 14 And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. 15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see. 16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them. 24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. 25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. 26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? 27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples? 28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’ disciples. 29 We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is. 30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. 31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. 32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. 33 If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.
SH Ps. 118:8
8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.
SH Ps. 27:5
5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
SH 3:12-16
The Divine Being must be reflected by man, – else
man is not the image and likeness of the patient,
tender, and true, the One “altogether lovely;” but to
understand God is the work of eternity, and demands
absolute consecration of thought, energy, and desire.
SH 137:10-11
meant: Who or what is it that is able to do the work, so
mysterious to the popular mind?
SH 28:15
Neither the origin, the character, nor the work of
Jesus was generally understood. Not a single compo-
nent part of his nature did the material
world measure aright. Even his righteous-
less and purity did not hinder men from saying: He
is a glutton and a friend of the impure, and Beelzebub is
his patron.
SH 82:31-2
In a world of sin and sensuality hastening to a
greater development of power, it is wise earnestly to
consider whether it is the human mind or the divine
Mind which is influencing one.
SH 159:30-2
Ignorant of the fact that a man’s belief produces dis-
ease and all its symptoms, the ordinary physician is
liable to increase disease with his own mind, when he
should address himself to the work of destroying it through
the power of the divine Mind.
SH 161:31-3
The physician agrees
with his “adversary quickly,” but upon different terms
than does the metaphysician; for the matter-physician
agrees with the disease, while the metaphysician agrees
only with health and challenges disease.
SH 423:15
The matter-physician deals with matter as both his foe
and his remedy. He regards the ailment as weakened or
strengthened according to the evidence which
matter presents. The metaphysician, making
Mind his basis of operation irrespective of matter and
regarding the truth and harmony of being as superior to
error and discord, has rendered himself strong, instead
of weak, to cope with the case; and he proportionately
strengthens his patient with the stimulus of courage and
conscious power. Both Science and consciousness are
now at work in the economy of being according to the law
of Mind, which ultimately asserts its absolute supremacy.
SH 456:22
Truth does
the work, and you must both understand and abide by the
divine Principle of your demonstration.
SH 152:5
The author has endeavored
to make this book the AEsculapius of mind as well as of
body, that it may give hope to the sick and heal them,
although they know not how the work is done. Truth
has a healing effect, even when not fully understood.
SH 521:5-6
All that is made is
the work of God, and all is good.
SH 256:13-23
The everlasting I AM is not bounded nor compressed
within the narrow limits of physical humanity, nor can
He be understood aright through mortal con-
cepts. The precise form of God must be of
small importance in comparison with the sublime ques-
tion, What is infinite Mind or divine Love?
Who is it that demands our obedience? He who, in
the language of Scripture, “doeth according to His will
in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the
earth; and none can stay His hand, or say unto Him,
What doest Thou?
SH 305:13
The verity that God’s image is not
a creator, though he reflects the creation of Mind, God,
constitutes the underlying reality of reflection. “Then
answered Jesus and said unto them: Verily, verily I say
unto you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he
seeth the Father do: for what things soever He doeth,
these also doeth the Son likewise.
SH 483:22-30, 32
Because the Science of Mind seems to bring into dis-
honor the ordinary scientific schools, which wrestle with
material observations alone, this Science has
met with opposition; but if any system honors
God, it ought to receive aid, not opposition, from all think-
ing persons. And Christian Science does honor God as
no other theory honors Him, and it does this in the way
of His appointing, by doing many wonderful works
through the divine name and nature.
Christianity
will never be based on a divine Principle and so found to
be unerring, until its absolute Science is reached. When
this is accomplished, neither pride, prejudice, bigotry,
nor envy can wash away its foundation, for it is built upon
the rock, Christ.

Living a life of gratitude

2nd Church, Berkeley, Wed. readings, 9/16/15
SH Ps. 66:1, 2
1 Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands: 2 Sing forth the honour of his name: make his praise glorious.
SH Ps. 100:2, 3 1st it, 4, 5
2 Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. 3 …it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. 5 For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
SH Ps. 107:9, 14, 22 1st declare, 29, 35-37, 42 (to 1st :), 43
9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. 14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder. 22 …declare his works with rejoicing. 29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. 35 He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings. 36 And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation; 37 And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase. 42 The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: 43 Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.
SH I Chron. 29:10 1st David, 11-13
10 …David blessed the LORD before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, LORD God of Israel our father, for ever and ever. 11 Thine, O LORD is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all. 12 Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. 13 Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.
SH John 11:41-44
41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. 42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. 43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
SH Matt. 14:15-20
15 And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. 16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. 17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. 18 He said, Bring them hither to me. 19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. 20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
SH Mark 14:1 (to 1st :), 17, 22, 23
1 After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: 17 And in the evening he cometh with the twelve. 22 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. 23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.
SH II Thess. 1:3
3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;
SH Col. 3:15
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
SH 3:22-24, 27-32
Are we really grateful for the good
already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the
blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more.
If we are ungrateful for Life, Truth, and Love, and
yet return thanks to God for all blessings, we are in-
sincere and incur the sharp censure our Master pro-
nounces on hypocrites. In such a case, the only
acceptable prayer is to put the finger on the lips and
remember our blessings.
SH 8:14-18
If we feel the aspiration, hu-
mility, gratitude, and love which our words express,-
this God accepts; and it is wise not to try to deceive
ourselves or others, for “there is nothing covered that
shall not be revealed.
SH 26:1-18
While we adore Jesus, and the heart overflows with
gratitude for what he did for mortals, – treading alone
his loving pathway up to the throne of
glory, in speechless agony exploring the way
for us, – yet Jesus spares us not one individual expe-
rience, if we follow his commands faithfully; and all
have the cup of sorrowful effort to drink in proportion
to their demonstration of his love, till all are redeemed
through divine Love.
The Christ was the Spirit which Jesus implied in his
own statements: “I am the way, the truth, and the life;”
“I and my Father are one.” This Christ,
or divinity of the man Jesus, was his divine
nature, the godliness which animated him. Divine Truth,
Life, and Love gave Jesus authority over sin, sickness,
and death. His mission was to reveal the Science of
celestial being, to prove what God is and what He does
for man.
SH 329:5-12 (to 1st .)
A little leaven leavens the whole lump. A little under-
standing of Christian Science proves the truth of all that
I say of it. Because you cannot walk on the
water and raise the dead, you have no right to
question the great might of divine Science in these direc-
tions. Be thankful that Jesus, who was the true demon-
strator of Science, did these things, and left his example for
us.
SH 5:15-18
The followers of Christ drank his cup.
Ingratitude and persecution filled it to the brim; but God
pours the riches of His love into the understanding and
affections, giving us strength according to our day.
SH 124:32-6
The elements and functions of the physical body and
of the physical world will change as mortal mind changes
its beliefs. What is now considered the best condition
for organic and functional health in the human
body may no longer be found indispensable
to health. Moral conditions will be found always har-
monious and health-giving.
SH 125:12
As human thought changes from one stage to an-
other of conscious pain and painlessness, sorrow and
joy, – from fear to hope and from faith to understand-
ing, – the visible manifestation will at last be man gov-
erned by Soul, not by material sense. Reflecting God’s
government, man is self-governed. When subordinate
to the divine Spirit, man cannot be controlled by sin or
death, thus proving our material theories about laws of
health to be valueless.
SH 422:14
As when an acid and alkali
meet and bring out a third quality, so mental and moral
chemistry changes the material base of thought, giving
more spirituality to consciousness and causing it to depend
less on material evidence. These changes which go on
in mortal mind serve to reconstruct the body. Thus
Christian Science, by the alchemy of Spirit, destroys sin
and death.
SH 495:2
Truth casts out error now
as surely as it did nineteen centuries ago. All
of Truth is not understood; hence its healing power is not
fully demonstrated.
SH 505:22-25
Spiritual understanding unfolds
Mind, – Life, Truth, and Love, – and demonstrates the
divine sense, giving the spiritual proof of the universe in
Christian Science.
SH 517:7-10
The life-giving
quality of Mind is Spirit, not matter. The ideal man
corresponds to creation, to intelligence, and to Truth.
The ideal woman corresponds to Life and to Love.
SH 57:4-5, 8-11
Union of the masculine and feminine qualities consti-
tutes completeness.
These
different elements conjoin naturally with each other, and
their true harmony is in spiritual oneness. Both sexes
should be loving, pure, tender, and strong.

A Christian Scientist occupies the place at this period
of which Jesus spoke to his disciples, when he said: “Ye
are the salt of the earth.” “Ye are the light
of the world. A city that is set on an hill can-
not be hid.” Let us watch, work, and pray that this salt
lose not its saltness, and that this light be not hid, but
radiate and glow into noontide glory.

Man, the expression of Soul

Readings for Wed., 9/2/15, Second Church, Berkeley
SH Ps. 42:1, 2, 5, 8
1 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. 2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? 5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. 8 Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the day time, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.
SH Ps. 51:10, 12, 16 1st thou, 17
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. 16 …thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
SH Ps. 90:1, 2, 14, 16, 17 (to 1st .)
1 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. 14 O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. 16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children. 17 And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.
SH Ps. 103:8, 20, 22 2nd bless
8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. 20 Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. 22 Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul.
SH Matt. 14:14 1st Jesus
14 …Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
SH Luke 15:1-10
1 Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. 2 And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them. 3 And he spake this parable unto them, saying, 4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? 5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. 7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. 8 Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? 9 And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost. 10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.
SH Acts 10:38 1st God
38 …God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
SH Eph. 4:1-3
1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, 2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
SH Col. 3:3 1st your, 15-17
3 …your life is hid with Christ in God. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
SH 9:17
Dost thou “love the Lord thy God with all thy
heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind”?
This command includes much, even the sur-
render of all merely material sensation, affec-
tion, and worship. This is the El Dorado of Christianity.
It involves the Science of Life, and recognizes only the
divine control of Spirit, in which Soul is our master,
and material sense and human will have no place.
SH 120:4-6
Soul, or Spirit, is God, unchangeable and eternal; and
man coexists with and reflects Soul, God, for man is God’s
image.
SH 172:15
If man was first a material being, he must have passed
through all the forms of matter in order to become man.
If the material body is man, he is a portion of
matter, or dust. On the contrary, man is the
image and likeness of Spirit; and the belief that there is
Soul in sense or Life in matter obtains in mortals, alias
mortal mind, to which the apostle refers when he says
that we must “put off the old man.
SH 204:30-6 2nd The
Mind.
The belief that God lives in matter is pantheistic. The
error, which says that Soul is in body, Mind is in matter,
and good is in evil, must unsay it and cease from such
utterances; else God will continue to be hidden from hu-
manity, and mortals will sin without knowing that they
are sinning, will lean on matter instead of Spirit, stumble
with lameness, drop with drunkenness, consume with dis-
case, – all because of their blindness, their false sense
concerning God and man.
SH 215:4-7
If Spirit, Soul, could sin or be lost, then being and im-
mortality would be lost, together with all the faculties of
Mind; but being cannot be lost while God ex-
ists.
SH 560:10-15
Heaven represents harmony, and divine Science inter-
prets the Principle of heavenly harmony. The great
miracle, to human sense, is divine Love, and
the grand necessity of existence is to gain the
true idea of what constitutes the kingdom of
heaven in man.
SH 273:29-7
Science shows that material, conflicting mortal opin-
ions and beliefs emit the effects of error at all times, but
this atmosphere of mortal mind cannot be destructive to
morals and health when it is opposed promptly and per-
sistently by Christian Science. Truth and Love antidote
this mental miasma, and thus invigorate and sustain ex-
istence. Unnecessary knowledge gained from
the five senses is only temporal, – the concep-
tion of mortal mind, the offspring of sense, not
of Soul, Spirit, – and symbolizes all that is evil and
perishable.
SH 280:21-24
The argument of the serpent in the allegory, “Ye
shall be as gods,” urges through every avenue the belief
that Soul is in body, and that infinite Spirit, and Life, is
in finite forms.
SH 288:20-26
The chief stones in the temple of Christian Science are
to be found in the following postulates: that Life is God,
good, and not evil; that Soul is sinless, not
to be found in the body; that Spirit is not, and
cannot be, materialized; that Life is not subject
to death; that the spiritual real man has no birth, no ma-
terial life, and no death.
SH 302:19-24
The Science of being reveals man as perfect,
even as the Father is perfect, because the Soul, or Mind,
of the spiritual man is God, the divine Principle of all
being, and because this real man is governed by Soul
instead of sense, by the law of Spirit, not by the so-called
laws of matter.
SH 330:11-12 God
God is infinite, the only Life, substance, Spirit, or
Soul, the only intelligence of the universe, including man.
SH 335:18-20, 22
Spirit is eternal, divine. Noth-
ing but Spirit, Soul, can evolve Life, for Spirit
is more than all else.
Spirit, for Spirit is not finite. Only by losing the false
sense of Soul can we gain the eternal unfolding of Life as
immortality brought to light.
SH 396:26-30
Keep distinctly in
thought that man is the offspring of God, not of man;
that man is spiritual, not material; that Soul is Spirit,
outside of matter, never in it, never giving the body life
and sensation.
SH 590:1-3
KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. The rein of harmony in divine
Science; the realm of unerring, eternal, and omnipotent
Mind;
SH 477:7-8, 24-26
Soul, being Spirit, is seen in nothing imperfect
nor material.
Soul can never reflect anything inferior to
Spirit.
Man is the expression of Soul.

Friend and comforter

Wednesday, 8/26/15 readings, Second Church Berkeley
SH Ps. 139:17, 18
17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! 18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
SH Isa. 40:1
1 Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.
SH Isa. 52:9, 10
9 Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. 10 The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
SH Gen. 12:1, 2
1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. 2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. 4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. 5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. 6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God. 7 And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; 8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; 10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt. 11 And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? 12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee;

11 And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend.
SH Isa. 41:8 1st thou, 10
8 …thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend. 10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
SH John 13:31 1st Jesus, 34
31 …Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
SH John 14:15-18, 25, 26
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. 26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
SH Rom. 12:10
10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
SH II Pet. 1:2, 3
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
SH Rev. 4:11
11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
SH 518:15-19
The rich in spirit help the poor in
one grand brotherhood, all having the same
Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth
his brother’s need and supplieth it, seeking his own in
another’s good.

Science is the sovereign panacea, giving strength to the
weakness of mortal mind, – strength from the immortal
and omnipotent Mind, – and lifting humanity above
itself into purer desires, even into spiritual power and
good-will to man.
SH 366:30-31
If we would open their prison doors for the sick, we
must first learn to bind up the broken-hearted.
SH 433:31-1 Christ
Christ, Truth, the spirit of Life and the
friend of Mortal Man, can open wide those prison doors
and set the captive free.
SH 495:8 classify
classify sickness and error as our Master did,
when he spoke of the sick, “whom Satan hath
bound,” and find a sovereign antidote for error in the life-
giving power of Truth acting on human belief, a power
which opens the prison doors to such as are bound, and
sets the captive free physically and morally.
SH 78:28
Spirit blesses man, but man cannot “tell whence
it cometh.” By it the sick are healed, the sorrowing are
comforted, and the sinning are reformed. These are the
effects of one universal God, the invisible good dwelling
in eternal Science.
SH 34:5-9
that Truth has come to the understanding? If Christ,
Truth, has come to us in demonstration, no other com-
memoration is requisite, for demonstration is Immanuel,
or God with us; and if a friend be with us, why need we
memorials of that friend?
SH 49:14
The meek demonstrator of good, the highest instruc-
tor and friend of man, met his earthly fate alone with
God. No human eye was there to pity, no
arm to save. Forsaken by all whom he had
blessed, this faithful sentinel of God at the highest
post of power, charged with the grandest trust of
heaven, was ready to be transformed by the renewing
of the infinite Spirit. He was to prove that the Christ
is not subject to material conditions, but is above the
reach of human wrath, and is able, through Truth,
Life, and Love, to triumph over sin, sickness, death, and
the grave.
SH 234:4-8
Whatever inspires with wisdom, Truth, or Love – be
it song, sermon, or Science – blesses the human family
with crumbs of comfort from Christ’s table
feeding the hungry and giving living waters to
the thirsty.

SH 127:23
There is no physical science, inasmuch as all truth
proceeds from the divine Mind. Therefore truth is not
human, and is not a law of matter, for matter
is not a lawgiver. Science is an emanation of
divine Mind, and is alone able to interpret God aright.
It has a spiritual, and not a material origin. It is a divine
utterance, – the Comforter which leadeth into all truth.
Christian Science eschews what is called natural science,
in so far as this is built on the false hypotheses that matter
is its own lawgiver, that law is founded on material con-
ditions, and that these are final and overrule the might of
divine Mind. Good is natural and primitive. It is not
miraculous to itself.
SH 332:19 Jesus
Jesus demonstrated Christ; he proved that Christ
is the divine idea of God – the Holy Ghost,
or Comforter, revealing the divine Principle,
Love, and leading into all truth.
SH 497:5 We
We acknowledge and adore one supreme and in-
finite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the
Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God’s
image and likeness.
SH 271:20-22, 26-29 (to 1st .)
Our Master said, “But the Comforter . . . shall
teach you all things.” When the Science of Christianity
appears, it will lead you into all truth.
Those, who are willing to leave their nets or to cast
them on the right side for Truth, have the opportunity
now, as aforetime, to learn and to practise
Christian healing.
