Metaphysics resolves
things into thoughts, and exchanges the objects of sense
for the ideas of Soul.
These ideas are perfectly real and tangible to spiritual
consciousness, and they have this advantage over the ob-
jects and thoughts of material sense, – they are good and
eternal.

Both truth and error have come
nearer than ever before to the apprehension of mortals,
and truth will become still clearer as error is self-
destroyed.
Neither evil, disease, nor death can be
spiritual, and the material belief in them dis-
appears in the ratio of one’s spiritual growth.

The objects cognized by the physical senses have not
the reality of substance. They are only what mortal
belief calls them.

Christian Science brings to the body the sunlight of
Truth, which invigorates and purifies. Christian Science
acts as an alterative, neutralizing error with
Truth.
The effect of this Science is
to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it
may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind.

The dream that matter and error are something
must yield to reason and revelation. Then mortals
will behold the nothingness of sickness and sin, and
sin and sickness will disappear from consciousness.

I would not transform the infant at once into a
man, nor would I keep the suckling a lifelong babe.
No impossible thing do I ask when urging
the claims of Christian Science; but because
this teaching is in advance of the age, we
should not deny our need of its spiritual unfoldment.
Mankind will improve through Science and Christi-
anity. The necessity for uplifting the race is father to
the fact that Mind can do it; for Mind can impart
purity instead of impurity, strength instead of weak-
ness, and health instead of disease. Truth is an altera-
tive in the entire system, and can make it “every whit
whole.

The discoverer of Christian Science finds the path less
difficult when she has the high goal always before her
thoughts, than when she counts her footsteps
in endeavoring to reach it. When the desti-
nation is desirable, expectation speeds our progress. The
struggle for Truth makes one strong instead of weak,
resting instead of wearying one.

SH 328:20-25, 28 (only), 30-31

Understanding spiritual law and knowing that there is no material law, Jesus said: “These signs shall follow them that believe, . . . they shall take up serpents, and if they
drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them. They
shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Jesus’ promise is perpetual. The purpose of his great life-work extends through time and includes universal humanity.

SH 246:20-25

Except for the error of measuring and limiting all that is good and beautiful, man would enjoy more than threescore years and ten and still maintain his vigor, freshness, and promise. Man, governed by immortal Mind, is always beautiful and grand.

SH 260:24-30

Selfishness and sensualism are educated in mortal
mind by the thoughts ever recurring to one’s self, by
conversation about the body, and by the expectation of
perpetual pleasure or pain from it; and this education
is at the expense of spiritual growth. If we array
thought in mortal vestures, it must lose its immortal
nature.

SH 396:1-13

One should never hold in mind the thought of disease, but should efface from thought all forms and types of disease, both for one’s own sake and for that of the patient. Avoid talking illness to the patient. Make no unne-
cessary inquiries relative to feelings or disease. Never
startle with a discouraging remark about recovery, nor draw attention to certain symptoms as unfavorable, avoid speaking aloud the name of the disease. Never say beforehand how much you have to contend with in a case, nor encourage in the patient’s thought the expectation of growing worse before a crisis is passed.

SH 342:7-12

He that decries this Science does it presumptuously,
in the face of Bible history and in defiance of the direct
command of Jesus, “Go ye into all the world, and preach
the gospel,” to which command was added the promise
that his students should cast out evils and heal the sick.

SH 560:6

Revelation xii. .1. And there appeared a great wonder in 
heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon
under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve
stars.

SH 562:11-28 2nd The

The spiritual idea is crowned with twelve stars. The
twelve tribes of Israel with all mortals, – separated by
belief from man’s divine origin and the true
idea, – will through much tribulation yield to
the activities of the divine Principle of man in the har-
mony of Science. These are the stars in the crown of
rejoicing. They are the lamps in the spiritual heavens
of the age, which show the workings of the spiritual idea
by healing the sick and the sinning, and by manifesting
the light which shines “unto the perfect day” as the night
of materialism wanes.
Revelation xii. 2. And she being with child cried, travail-
ing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
Also the spiritual idea is typified by a woman in tra-
vail, waiting to be delivered of her sweet promise, but re-
membering no more her sorrow for joy that
the birth goes on; for great is the idea, and the
travail portentous.

SH 558:10-16

To mortal sense Science seems at first obscure, abstract, and dark; but a bright promise crowns its brow. When understood, it is Truth’s prism and praise. When you look it fairly in the face, you can heal by its means, and it has for you a light above the sun, for God “is the light thereof.

Right motives
give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to
speech and action.

SH 2:1-7

What are the motives for prayer? Do we pray to
make ourselves better or to benefit those who hear us,
to enlighten the infinite or to be heard of
men? Are we benefited by praying? Yes,
the desire which goes forth hungering after righteous-
ness is blessed of our Father, and it does not return
unto us void.

SH 15:7

The Father in secret is unseen to the physical senses,
but He knows all things and rewards according to
motives, not according to speech. To enter into the
heart of prayer, the door of the erring senses must be
closed. Lips must be mute and materialism silent,
that man may have audience with Spirit, the divine
Principle, Love, which destroys all error.

SH 36:24-29

It is useless to suppose that the
wicked can gloat over their offences to the last moment
and then be suddenly pardoned and pushed into heaven,
or that the hand of Love is satisfied with giving us only
toil, sacrifice, cross-bearing, multiplied trials, and mock-
ery of our motives in return for our efforts at well doing.

SH 51:28

Jesus was unselfish. His spirituality separated him
from sensuousness, and caused the selfish materialist
to hate him; but it was this spirituality which enabled
Jesus to heal the sick, cast out evil, and raise the
dead.

SH 328:20-25, 28-1

Under-
standing spiritual law and knowing that there is no mate-
rial law, Jesus said: “These signs shall follow them that
believe, . . . they shall take up serpents, and if they
drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them. They
shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Jesus’ promise is perpetual. Had it been given only
to his immediate disciples, the Scriptural passage would
read you, not they. The purpose of his great life-work
extends through time and includes universal humanity.
Its Principle is infinite, reaching beyond the pale of a
single period or of a limited following.

SH 58:7-11

Unselfish
ambition, noble life-motives, and purity, –
these constituents of thought, mingling, constitute in-
dividually and collectively true happiness, strength, and
permanence.

SH 60:4-15

Kindred tastes, motives, and aspirations are necessary
to the formation of a happy and permanent companion-
ship. The beautiful in character is also the
good, welding indissolubly the links of affec-
tion. A mother’s affection cannot be weaned from her
child, because the mother-love includes purity and con-
stancy, both of which are immortal. Therefore maternal
affection lives on under whatever difficulties.
From the logic of events we learn that selfishness
and impurity alone are fleeting, and that wisdom will
ultimately put asunder what she hath not joined
together.

SH 151:8-13

Great respect is due the motives and philanthropy of
the higher class of physicians. We know that if they un-
derstood the Science of Mind-healing, and were
in possession of the enlarged power it confers
to benefit the race physically and spiritually, they would
rejoice with us.

SH 238:1-11

Motives and acts are not rightly valued before they are
understood. It is well to wait till those whom you would
benefit are ready for the blessing, for Science
is working changes in personal character as
well as in the material universe.
To obey the Scriptural command, “Come out from
among them, and be ye separate,” is to incur society’s
frown; but this frown, more than flatteries, enables one
to be Christian. Losing her crucifix, the Roman Catholic
girl said, “I have nothing left but Christ.” “If God be
for us, who can be against us?

SH 506:18-21

Spirit, God, gathers unformed thoughts into their
proper channels, and unfolds these thoughts,
even as He opens the petals of a holy purpose
in order that the purpose may appear.

SH 326:16-21

The purpose and motive to live aright can be gained
now. This point won, you have started as you should.
You have begun at the numeration-table of Christian
Science, and nothing but wrong intention can hinder your
advancement. Working and praying with true motives,
your Father will open the way.

SH 570:23

Those ready for the blessing
you impart will give thanks. The waters will be paci-
fied, and Christ will command the wave.

Life is, always
has been, and ever will be independent of
matter; for life is God, and man is the idea
of God, not formed materially but spiritually, and not
subject to decay and dust.
The great truth in the Science of being, that the real
man was, is, and ever shall be perfect, is incontrovertible;
for if man is the image, reflection, of God, he is neither
inverted nor subverted, but upright and Godlike.

SH 12:31

In divine
Science, where prayers are mental, all may avail them-
selves of God as “a very present help in trouble.”
Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and
bestowals. It is the open fount which cries, “Ho,
every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.

SH 34:5

If Christ,
Truth, has come to us in demonstration, no other com-
memoration is requisite, for demonstration is Immanuel,
or God with us; and if a friend be with us, why need we
memorials of that friend?

SH 35:19-20 Our church

Our
church is built on the divine Principle, Love.

SH 107:7-10

This apodictical Principle points to the revelation of
Immanuel, “God with us,” – the sovereign ever-pres-
ence, delivering the children of men from
every ill “that flesh is heir to.

SH 14:1-15

If we are sensibly with the body and regard omnipo-
tence as a corporeal, material person, whose ear we
would gain, we are not “absent from the
body” and “present with the Lord” in the
demonstration of Spirit. We cannot “serve two mas-
ters.” To be “present with the Lord” is to have, not
mere emotional ecstasy or faith, but the actual demon-
stration and understanding of Life as revealed in
Christian Science. To be “with the Lord” is to be in
obedience to the law of God, to be absolutely governed
by divine Love,- by Spirit, not by matter.
Become conscious for a single moment that Life and
intelligence are purely spiritual, – neither in nor of
matter, – and the body will then utter no
complaints.

SH 216:28-1

When you say, “Man’s body is material,” I say with
Paul: Be “willing rather to be absent from the body,
and to be present with the Lord.” Give up
your material belief of mind in matter, and
have but one Mind, even God; for this Mind forms its
own likeness.

SH 243:9

But
the same “Mind . . . which was also in Christ Jesus”
must always accompany the letter of Science in order to
confirm and repeat the ancient demonstrations of prophets
and apostles. That those wonders are not more com-
monly repeated to-day, arises not so much from lack of

The Psalmist sang: “What ailed
thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest? Thou Jordan,
that thou wast driven back? Ye mountains,
that ye skipped like rams, and ye little hills,
like lambs? Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the
Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob.” The miracle
introduces no disorder, but unfolds the primal order,
establishing the Science of God’s unchangeable law.

SH 325:13-15

When spiritual being is understood in all its
perfection, continuity, and might, then shall man be found
in God’s image.

SH 275:20

Divine metaphysics, as revealed to spiritual understand-
ing, shows clearly that all is Mind, and that Mind is
God, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience,
– that is, all power, all presence, all Science.
Hence all is in reality the manifestation of Mind.

The Christ
is incorporeal, spiritual, – yea, the divine
image and likeness, dispelling the illusions of the senses;
the Way, the Truth, and the Life, healing the sick and

Jesus demonstrated Christ; he proved that Christ
is the divine idea of God – the Holy Ghost,
or Comforter, revealing the divine Principle,
Love, and leading into all truth.

The advent of Jesus of Nazareth marked the
first century of the Christian era, but the Christ is

Christ, Truth,
was demonstrated through Jesus to prove the power of
Spirit over the flesh, – to show that Truth is made

St. Paul wrote, “Let us
lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so
easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that
is set before us;” that is, let us put aside material self
and sense, and seek the divine Principle and Science of
all healing.

KJV 384:6

God never
punishes man for doing right, for honest labor, or for
deeds of kindness, though they expose him to fatigue,
cold, heat, contagion. If man seems to incur the penalty
through matter, this is but a belief of mortal mind, not
an enactment of wisdom, and man has only to enter his
protest against this belief in order to annul it. Through
this action of thought and its results upon the body, the
student will prove to himself, by small beginnings, the
grand verities of Christian Science.

KJV 253:32-15

The divine demand, “Be ye therefore perfect,” is sci-
entific, and the human footsteps leading to perfection are
indispensable. Individuals are consistent who, watching
and praying, can “run, and not be weary; . . .
walk, and not faint,” who gain good rapidly
and hold their position, or attain slowly and
yield not to discouragement. God requires perfection,
but not until the battle between Spirit and flesh is fought
and the victory won. To stop eating, drinking, or being
clothed materially before the spiritual facts of existence
are gained step by step, is not legitimate. When we wait
patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs
our path. Imperfect mortals grasp the ultimate of spir-
itual perfection slowly; but to begin aright and to con-
tinue the strife of demonstrating the great problem of
being, is doing much.

KJV 276:1-11

Having one God, one Mind, unfolds the power that
heals the sick, and fulfils these sayings of Scripture, “I
am the Lord that healeth thee,” and “I have
found a ransom.” When the divine precepts
are understood, they unfold the foundation of fellowship,
in which one mind is not at war with another, but all have
one Spirit, God, one intelligent source, in accordance with
the Scriptural command: “Let this Mind be in you,
which was also in Christ Jesus.” Man and his Maker
are correlated in divine Science, and real consciousness
is cognizant only of the things of God.

KJV 406:1-2, 4-6, 9

The Bible contains the recipe for all healing. “The
leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
Principle. The tree is typical of man’s divine
Principle, which is equal to every emergency, offering
full salvation from sin, sickness, and death.

fect Love casteth out fear.

KJV 365:15, 31

If the Scientist reaches his patient through divine
Love, the healing work will be accomplished at one
visit, and the disease will vanish into its native
nothingness like dew before the morning sun-
shine. If the Scientist has enough Christly affection to
win his own pardon, and such commendation as the Mag-
dalen gained from Jesus, then he is Christian enough to
practise scientifically and deal with his patients compas-
sionately; and the result will correspond with the spiritual
intent.
The poor suf-
fering heart needs its rightful nutriment, such as peace,
patience in tribulation, and a priceless sense of the dear
Father’s loving-kindness.

KJV 518:15-19

The rich in spirit help the poor in
one grand brotherhood, all having the same
Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth
his brother’s need and supplieth it, seeking his own in
another’s good.

KJV 367:3-9

The tender word and Christian
encouragement of an invalid, pitiful patience
with his fears and the removal of them, are better than
hecatombs of gushing theories, stereotyped borrowed
speeches, and the doling of arguments, which are but so
many parodies on legitimate Christian Science, aflame
with divine Love.

Love for God and man is the true
incentive in both healing and teaching. Love inspires,
illumines, designates, and leads the way. Right motives
give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to
speech and action. Love is priestess at the altar of
Truth. Wait patiently for divine Love to move upon the
waters of mortal mind, and form the perfect concept.
Patience must “have her perfect work.

Christianity as Jesus taught it was not
a creed, nor a system of ceremonies, nor a special gift
from a ritualistic Jehovah; but it was the demonstration
of divine Love casting out error and healing the sick,
not merely in the name of Christ, or Truth, but in demon-
stration of Truth, as must be the case in the cycles of

divine light.

KJV 72:9-13 As

As light destroys darkness and in the place of darkness all is light, so (in absolute Science) Soul, or God,
is the only truth-giver to man. Truth destroys mortality, and brings to light immortality.

KJV 215:15-21

We are sometimes led to believe that darkness is as real
as light; but Science affirms darkness to be only a mortal
sense of the absence of light, at the coming of
which darkness loses the appearance of reality.
So sin and sorrow, disease and death, are the suppositional

absence of Life, God, and flee as phantoms of error before

truth and love.

When apparently near the confines of mortal existence,
standing already within the shadow of the death-valley,
I learned these truths in divine Science: that
all real being is in God, the divine Mind, and
that Life, Truth, and Love are all-powerful and ever-
present; that the opposite of Truth, – called error, sin,
sickness, disease, death, – is the false testimony of false
material sense, of mind in matter; that this false sense
evolves, in belief, a subjective state of mortal mind which
this same so-called mind names matter thereby shutting
out the true sense of Spirit.

tion of this problem of Mind-healing, searched the Scrip-
tures and read little else, kept aloof from so-
ciety, and devoted time and energies to dis-
covering a positive rule. The search was sweet, calm, and buoyant with hope, not selfish nor depressing. I knew
the Principle of all harmonious Mind-action to be God,
and that cures were produced in primitive Christian
healing by holy, uplifting faith; but I must know the
Science of this healing, and I won my way to absolute

ing came to me gradually and apparently through divine
power. When a new spiritual idea is borne to earth, the

must destroy the entire mass of error, and so be eternally
glorified in man’s spiritual freedom.

As a material, theoretical life-basis is found to be a
misapprehension of existence, the spiritual and divine
Principle of man dawns upon human thought,
and leads it to “where the young child was,”
– even to the birth of a new-old idea, to the spiritual
sense of being and of what Life includes. Thus the whole
earth will be transformed by Truth on its pinions of light,
chasing away the darkness of error.

God rests in action. Imparting has not impoverished,
can never impoverish, the divine Mind. No
exhaustion follows the action of this Mind,
according to the apprehension of divine Science. The
highest and sweetest rest, even from a human standpoint,
is in holy work.

SH 257:27-29

Infinite Mind cannot be limited to a finite form,
or Mind would lose its infinite character as inexhaustible
Love, eternal Life, omnipotent Truth.

SH 507:24

Infinite Mind creates and governs all, from the men-
tal molecule to infinity. This divine Principle of all
expresses Science and art throughout His
creation, and the immortality of man and the
universe. Creation is ever appearing, and must ever con-
tinue to appear from the nature of its inexhaustible source.
Mortal sense inverts this appearing and calls ideas mate-
rial. Thus misinterpreted, the divine idea seems to fall
to the level of a human or material belief, called mortal
man. But the seed is in itself, only as the divine Mind
is All and reproduces all – as Mind is the multiplier,
and Mind’s infinite idea, man and the universe, is the
product. The only intelligence or substance of a thought,
a seed, or a flower is God, the creator of it. Mind is the
Soul of all. Mind is Life, Truth, and Love which gov-
erns all.

SH 128:11

The human
mind, imbued with this spiritual understanding, becomes
more elastic, is capable of greater endurance, escapes
somewhat from itself, and requires less repose. A knowl-
edge of the Science of being develops the latent abilities
and possibilities of man. It extends the atmosphere of
thought, giving mortals access to broader and higher
realms. It raises the thinker into his native air of insight
and perspicacity.

SH 387:5-12

Mind can be overworked? When we reach
our limits of mental endurance, we conclude
that intellectual labor has been carried sufficiently far;
but when we realize that immortal Mind is ever active,
and that spiritual energies can neither wear out nor can
so-called material law trespass upon God-given powers
and resources, we are able to rest in Truth, refreshed by
the assurances of immortality, opposed to mortality.

SH 79:29-3

Mind-science teaches that mortals need “not be weary
in well doing.” It dissipates fatigue in doing
good. Giving does not impoverish us in the
service of our Maker, neither does withholding enrich us.
We have strength in proportion to our apprehension of
the truth, and our strength is not lessened by giving
utterance to truth.

SH 217:19

When mentality gives
rest to the body, the next toil will fatigue you less, for
you are working out the problem of being in divine meta-
physics; and in proportion as you understand the con-
trol which Mind has over so-called matter, you will be
able to demonstrate this control. The scientific and
permanent remedy for fatigue is to learn the power of
Mind over the body or any illusion of physical weariness,
and so destroy this illusion, for matter cannot be weary
and heavy-laden.

Jesus acknowledged no ties of the flesh.
father. He recognized Spirit, God, as the only creator, and
therefore as the Father of all.
First in the list of Christian duties, he taught his fol-
lowers the healing power of Truth and Love. He attached
no importance to dead ceremonies. It is the
living Christ, the practical Truth, which makes
Jesus “the resurrection and the life” to all who follow him
in deed. Obeying his precious precepts, – following his
demonstration so far as we apprehend it, – we drink of
his cup, partake of his bread, are baptized with his pu-
rity; and at last we shall rest, sit down with him, in a full
understanding of the divine Principle which triumphs
over death.

Millions of unprejudiced minds – simple seekers for
Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert – are wait-
ing and watching for rest and drink. Give
them a cup of cold water in Christ’s name,
and never fear the consequences.

The
lightnings and thunderbolts of error may burst and flash
till the cloud is cleared and the tumult dies away in the
distance. Then the raindrops of divinity refresh the
earth. As St. Paul says: “There remaineth therefore
a rest to the people of God” (of Spirit).

In his final demonstration, called the ascen-
sion, which closed the earthly record of Jesus, he rose
above the physical knowledge of his disciples, and the
material senses saw him no more.
His students then received the Holy Ghost. By this is
meant, that by all they had witnessed and suffered, they
were roused to an enlarged understanding of divine Sci-
ence, even to the spiritual interpretation and discernment
of Jesus’ teachings and demonstrations, which gave them
a faint conception of the Life which is God.

SH 53:16-18

The world could not interpret aright the discomfort
which Jesus inspired and the spiritual blessings which
might flow from such discomfort.

SH 54:8-17

Who is ready to follow his teaching and example? All
must sooner or later plant themselves in Christ, the true
idea of God. That he might liberally pour
his dear-bought treasures into empty or sin-
filled human storehouses, was the inspiration of Jesus’
intense human sacrifice. In witness of his divine com-
mission, he presented the proof that Life, Truth, and
Love heal the sick and the sinning, and triumph over
death through Mind, not matter. This was the highest
proof he could have offered of divine Love.

SH 298:8-10

What is termed material sense can report only a mor-
tal temporary sense of things, whereas spiritual sense can
bear witness only to Truth.

SH 122:1-7

The evidence of the physical senses often reverses the
real Science of being, and so creates a reign of discord, –
assigning seeming power to sin, sickness, and
death; but the great facts of Life, rightly un-
derstood, defeat this triad of errors, contradict their false
witnesses, and reveal the kingdom of heaven, – the actual
reign of harmony on earth.

SH 348:26-32

I have never supposed the world would immediately
witness the full fruitage of Christian Science, or that sin,
disease, and death would not be believed for
an indefinite time; but this I do aver, that,
as a result of teaching Christian Science, ethics and
temperance have received all impulse, health has been
restored, and longevity increased.

SH 134:14-26

Man-made doctrines are waning. They have not waxed
strong in times of trouble. Devoid of the Christ-power,
how can they illustrate the doctrines of Christ
or the miracles of grace? Denial of the possi-
bility of Christian healing robs Christianity of the very
element, which gave it divine force and its astonishing and
unequalled success in the first century.
The true Logos is demonstrably Christian Science, the
natural law of harmony which overcomes discord, – not
because this Science is supernatural or pre-
ternatural, nor because it is an infraction of
divine law, but because it is the immutable law of God,
good.

SH 120:15-17

Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind; nor
can the material senses bear reliable testimony on the sub-
ject of health.

SH 417:16

When you silence the witness against your
plea, you destroy the evidence, for the disease disap-
pears. The evidence before the corporeal senses is not
the Science of immortal man.

SH 202:6-13

If men would bring to bear upon the study of the
Science of Mind half the faith they bestow upon the so-
called pains and pleasures of material sense,
they would not go on from bad to worse,
until disciplined by the prison and the scaffold; but
the whole human family would be redeemed through
the merits of Christ, – through the perception and ac-
ceptance of Truth.

SH 451:16-18

If our hopes and affec-
tions are spiritual, they come from above, not from be-
neath, and they bear as of old the fruits of the Spirit.

SH 411:10-12

If Spirit or the power of divine Love bear
witness to the truth, this is the ultimatum, the scientific
way, and the healing is instantaneous.

Tenderness accompa-
nies all the might imparted by Spirit. The individ-
uality created by God is not carnivorous, as witness the
millennial estate pictured by Isaiah: –

We should love our enemies
and help them on the basis of the Golden
Rule; but avoid casting pearls before those who trample
them under foot, thereby robbing both themselves and
others.
If mortals would keep proper ward over mortal mind,
the brood of evils which infest it would be cleared out.
We must begin with this so-called mind and
empty it of sin and sickness, or sin and sick-
ness will never cease. The present codes of human
systems disappoint the weary searcher after a divine
theology, adequate to the right education of human
thought.
Sin and disease must be thought before they can be
manifested. You must control evil thoughts in the first
instance, or they will control you in the second.
Evil thoughts and aims reach no farther and do no more
harm than one’s belief permits. Evil thoughts, lusts, and
malicious purposes cannot go forth, like wandering pollen,
from one human mind to another, finding unsuspected
lodgment, if virtue and truth build a strong defence.

SH 467:1-10

Question. – What are the demands of the Science of
Soul?
Answer. – The first demand of this Science is, “Thou
shalt have no other gods before me.” This me is Spirit.
Therefore the command means this: Thou shalt
have no intelligence, no life, no substance, no
truth, no love, but that which is spiritual. The second
is like unto it, “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”
It should be thoroughly understood that all men have one
Mind, one God and Father, one Life, Truth, and Love.

SH 138:27-2

Our Master said to every follower: “Go ye into all the
world, and preach the gospel to every creature! . . .
Heal the sick! . . . Love thy neighbor as
thyself!” It was this theology of Jesus which
healed the sick and the sinning. It is his theology in this
book and the spiritual meaning of this theology, which
heals the sick and causes the wicked to “forsake his way,
and the unrighteous man his thoughts.

SH 33:18

When the human element in him struggled with the
divine, our great Teacher said: “Not my will, but
Thine, be done!”- that is, Let not the flesh,
but the Spirit, be represented in me. This
is the new understanding of spiritual Love. It gives all
for Christ, or Truth. It blesses its enemies, heals the
sick, casts out error, raises the dead from trespasses
and sins, and preaches the gospel to the poor, the meek
in heart.

SH 48:25-27

Pale in the presence of his own momentous question,
“What is Truth,” Pilate was drawn into acquiescence
with the demands of Jesus’ enemies.

SH 50:26-18

The burden of that hour was terrible beyond human
conception. The distrust of mortal minds, disbelieving
the purpose of his mission, was a million
times sharper than the thorns which pierced
his flesh. The real cross, which Jesus bore up the hill
of grief, was the world’s hatred of Truth and Love. Not
the spear nor the material cross wrung from his faithful
lips the plaintive cry, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” It
was the possible loss of something more important than
human life which moved him, – the possible misappre-
hension of the sublimest influence of his career. This
dread added the drop of gall to his cup.
Jesus could have withdrawn himself from his enemies.
He had power to lay down a human sense of life for his
spiritual identity in the likeness of the divine;
but he allowed men to attempt the destruc-
tion of the mortal body in order that he might furnish
the proof of immortal life. Nothing could kill this Life
of man. Jesus could give his temporal life into his
enemies’ hands; but when his earth-mission was accom-
plished, his spiritual life, indestructible and eternal,
was found forever the same. He knew that matter had
no life and that real Life is God; therefore he could no
more be separated from his spiritual Life than God could
be extinguished.

SH 39:13-14

The Bible calls death an enemy, and Jesus
overcame death and the grave instead of yielding to them.

SH 266:13

Friends will betray and enemies will slander, until the
lesson is sufficient to exalt you; for “man’s extremity
is God’s opportunity.” The author has experienced the
foregoing prophecy and its blessings. Thus He teaches
mortals to lay down their fleshliness and gain spirituality.
This is done through self-abnegation. Universal Love
is the divine way in Christian Science.

Spirit imparts the understanding which uplifts con-
sciousness and leads into all truth. The Psalmist saith:
“The Lord on high is mightier than the noise
of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of
the sea.

Jesus walked on the
waves, fed the multitude, healed the sick, and raised the
dead in direct opposition to material laws. His acts were
the demonstration of Science, overcoming the false claims
of material sense or law.
Science shows that material, conflicting mortal opin-
ions and beliefs emit the effects of error at all times, but
this atmosphere of mortal mind cannot be destructive to
morals and health when it is opposed promptly and per-
sistently by Christian Science. Truth and Love antidote
this mental miasma, and thus invigorate and sustain ex-
istence.

S&H 391:7-13

Instead of blind and calm submission to the incipient
or advanced stages of disease, rise in rebellion against
them. Banish the belief that you can possi-
bly entertain a single intruding pain which can-
not be ruled out by the might of Mind, and in this way
you can prevent the development of pain in the body.
No law of God hinders this result.

S&H 393:32-4

It is well to be calm in sickness;
to be hopeful is still better; but to understand that sick-
ness is not real and that Truth can destroy its seeming
reality, is best of all, for this understanding is the uni-
versal and perfect remedy.

S&H 366:24-29

The
sick are terrified by their sick beliefs, and
sinners should be affrighted by their sinful beliefs; but
the Christian Scientist will be calm in the presence of
both sin and disease, knowing, as he does, that Life is
God and God is All.

S&H 494:15 Jesus

Jesus
demonstrated the inability of corporeality, as well as the
infinite ability of Spirit, thus helping erring
human sense to flee from its own convictions
and seek safety in divine Science. Reason, rightly di-
rected, serves to correct the errors of corporeal sense; but
sin, sickness, and death will seem real (even as the ex-
periences of the sleeping dream seem real) until the Sci-
ence of man’s eternal harmony breaks their illusion with
the unbroken reality of scientific being.

chemicalization produces pain or disease. Insist vehe-
mently on the great fact which covers the whole ground,
that God, Spirit, is all, and that there is none beside
Him.

S&H 455:8-10

You must utilize the moral
might of Mind in order to walk over the waves of error
and support your claims by demonstration.

S&H 358:9-11, 15

Christian Science, understood, coincides with the
Scriptures, and sustains logically and demonstratively
every point it presents.
It presents the calm and clear verdict of Truth
against error, uttered and illustrated by the prophets,
by Jesus, by his apostles, as is recorded throughout the
Scriptures.

We cannot build safely on false foundations.

S&H 269:21

The testimony of the material senses is neither abso-
lute nor divine. I therefore plant myself unreservedly
on the teachings of Jesus, of his apostles, of
the prophets, and on the testimony of the
Science of Mind. Other foundations there are none.
All other systems – systems based wholly or partly on
knowledge gained through the material senses – are reeds
shaken by the wind, not houses built on the rock.

S&H 96:21-23, 25-27, 31

Mortal error will vanish in a moral chemicalization.
This mental fermentation has begun, and will continue
until all errors of belief yield to understanding.
As this consummation draws nearer, he who has
shaped his course in accordance with divine Science
will endure to the end.
During this final conflict, wicked minds will endeavor
to find means by which to accomplish more evil; but
those who discern Christian Science will hold crime in
check. They will aid in the ejection of error. They
will maintain law and order, and cheerfully await the
certainty of ultimate perfection.
